Who We Are

Democrats Abroad is the official Democratic Party arm for the millions of Americans living outside the United States. We strive to provide Americans abroad a Democratic voice in our government and elect Democratic candidates by mobilizing the overseas vote.

Democrats Abroad has 42 country committees throughout Europe, the Americas, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. These country committees keep Americans abroad informed of their rights and help them participate in the U.S. political process. Our members live in more than 190 countries around the globe and vote in every state and Congressional district in the U.S.

Democrats Abroad is recognized as a "state" Party by the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and is represented on the DNC by eight voting members, as well as at the quadrennial Democratic National Convention.

Our online voter registration tool - votefromabroad.org - makes it easy to request a ballot and vote absentee from any place on the planet.

Report and Update: Support Tax Reform for Americans Abroad

Democrats Abroad is pleased to announce the publication of our 2017 Non-Resident Taxation Research report, “Can We Please Stop Paying Twice? – Reforming the U.S. Tax Code for Americans Abroad.”  The report provides data and testimony from Americans abroad on their experience filing from abroad and underscores the need for urgent reform to the tax code.   If you support tax reforms to exempt Americans living abroad from filing returns to declare income earned abroad then it is time to make your voice heard.  We refer you to the “Tax Reform For Americans Abroad Campaign in a Box”  and urge you to use it to tax action right away!  The time is NOW to call, email or write your members of Congress and the leaders serving on the Senate Finance Committee and House Ways & Means Committee, using the language in the Campaign, and ask for their support for Residency Based Taxation. **** Congress Working on 2017 Tax Reform The tragedy in Las Vegas, the on-going suffering of those in hurricane-affected areas of the US and the president’s various taunts may have distracted you from what’s happening on Capitol Hill these last 2 weeks, but be assured that the GOP leaders of the Congress have been busy selling their tax plan and moving their budget resolution through critical votes.  In order to manage dissent in their caucus they have been slow-dripping details of the proposal. The average American may be distracted from it but you can be certain that the legions of corporate lobbyists have been anything but absent during these critical days of budget and tax code horse-trading. The tax policy wonks haven’t seen enough to proclaim it decisively, but they are saying that Congress has so far fallen short of the president’s demands that tax cuts focus on the middle class and not the wealthy.  (We’re shocked, right?) Tax Reform for Americans Abroad We Americans abroad have a special set of concerns we’d like to lay in front of Congress whilst the details of the tax reform package have yet to crystallize.  We know from the approximately 4,500 responses to our survey of non-resident American taxpayers completed last month that there is enormous support for a radical change to the way the tax code treats non-resident taxpayers;  84% of respondents told us they support a switch from the current system of Citizenship-Based Taxation to Residency-Based Taxation (RBT) to resolve the many problems they are caused by a tax code that discriminates against them for being non-resident citizens.  As is explained in our RBT Frequently Asked Questions, under RBT Americans living outside the U.S. would continue to declare income generated in the U.S. but would be exempted from reporting to the Internal Revenue Service the income they generate in their country of residency. TAKE ACTION NOWIf you are a supporter of RBT the time to take action is NOW.  Please open our Taxation Reform for Americans Abroad Campaign in a Box and use it to reach out to Congress TODAY!  Share the Campaign in a Box and the “Can We Please Stop Paying Twice?” report with your network of Americans abroad and encourage them to do the same. Please forward your questions and comments to TaxationTF@democratsabroad.org. **** To find out more about the latest Taxation Task Force work, including the latest reports and Tax Advocacy Webinar recording, head over to the Taxation Task Force Blog.

St. Regis Residences in Singapore, Singapore

Join us for one of our most important events of the year-Get Out The Vote 2017.  There are special elections being held throughout the country on both the federal and state level and a general election being held in New Jersey and Virginia.  Currently, democratic control of state government is one of the best ways to fight the Republican agenda in Washington- and you know how important it is for us to take the House!  Please join our e-mail/phone banking event, where we will be calling or e-mailing our members to remind them to get in their absentee ballots for critical elections.  Come enjoy a bowl of chili and socialize with friends before we begin our GOTV efforts.  Phone calls are our first priority but if you do not feel comfortable speaking to our members (very benign calls) no worries-e-mails are the next best thing

Also, we will be voting for a new Vice-Chair and on by-law changes at the beginning of the event, so we need a quorum.

WHEN: Monday, October 23rd from 6:30-9:00

WHERE: The function room at the St. Regis Residences 31 Tanglin Rd. 247912. The building entrance is on Cuscaden Rd. Parking is at Tower C, and public transportation is available (see directions below).

WHAT TO BRING: A laptop, an earpiece, (you need both whether you are making calls or writing e-mails-people will hear music if you forget your earpiece even when e-mailing), and GOTV spirit. RSVP’s are critical as we will need to get you signed up for our free online portal to make calls or write e-mails before the event.

    Here’s why:

    • Virginia: Republicans are poised to take over state government in Virginia completely. The Governor and the full House of Delegates are up for election in November. The Senate is controlled by the Republicans. The polls indicate that Republicans and Democrats are neck and neck-this is going to be a close one!! Let us not have a repeat of 2016. We know what happens when Republicans are in complete control. We need you to help elect Democrat Ralph Northam as Governor and a Democratic House of Delegates!

    • New Jersey: The Governor and the entire state legislature are up for election on November 7th. Democratic candidate Phil Murphy has committed to fighting Trump and the Republican agenda in Washington- starting with abiding by the Paris Accords on Climate Change. If every state followed Phil Murphy’s lead, destructive policies coming out of D.C. could be stopped dead in their tracks! Let’s go for the trifecta and make sorely needed positive changes!

    • Washington: There are special elections in Washington. We can flip the state Senate blue with your help!

     • There will be a special election for Utah’s 3rd Congressional District seat on November 7th. This is a Republican held seat that we need to flip blue!!!!

If you cannot attend the event, you can make calls from home at your convenience. These campaigns will run until November, but we need you now!Just e-mail us at DemsAbroadLionCity@gmail.com and we will send you the information on how to sign up for our free online portal to make calls. Also, please feel free to e-mail us with any questions you might have.

Need a little incentive? The top 3 callers will be invited to a catered election result party with leadership and friends. You can also join a little friendly competition and see where you rank in the world in terms of call volume. Go to the leaderboard once you have signed on to our online portal. THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT POLITICAL ACTION YOU WILL TAKE ALL YEAR. Many of you have asked what is the best way to create change. Well, this is it. Your best form of protest is to vote and get others to do the same. Send a clear message to our Republican controlled Federal Government by helping us win all of these critical state races. Feel the energy and excitement of GOTV! There’s nothing like it.
