We Are One Geneva: Democrats Abroad Switzerland Adopts Resolution, Plans Rally inSupport of Public Workers Right to Collective Bargaining

(Geneva, Switzerland) – Inspired by events in Wisconsin, and together with working men and women in cities across the United States, Democrats Abroad Switzerland has organized a rally of solidarity on Monday, April 4th 2011 at 17:30 at the Place des Nations.

Resolution Adopted Denouncing Attacks on Workers’ Rights

This event is being organized following the unanimous adoption of the resolution entitled “We Are All Wisconsin – The World Is Watching” (http://www.democratsabroad.org/node/12936) at the organization’s Annual General Meeting held on 27 March.

The resolution denounces the unprecedented attacks against public sector workers, and the withdrawal of the right to bargain collectively for a voice at work. In response to the new wave of Republican attacks on unions and working people, the resolution calls for Democrats Abroad to join the entire labor movement ina day of rallies, vigils, and work site events on April 4.

Anniversary of the Assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The timing of the solidarity action scheduled for 4th April is significant, as it represents the 43rd anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in Memphis, Tennessee, where he had traveled to stand in solidarity with striking sanitation workers demanding their chance to attain the American Dream.

“We are proud to be a part of this event, organized around the theme ‘We Are One’ to show that these issues are being followed not only domestically, but across the world,” explains Maya Samara, Chair of Democrats Abroad, Switzerland. “We are joined in our action by Democrats Abroad in Israel, France, Germany, Guatemala, Spain, and Canada, as we ourselves join with trade unions across the country and around the world.”

The Solidarity Rally is taking place on Monday, April 4th, from 17:30 at the Place des Nations in Geneva.
