Race and racism in American elections

Public Lecture by Christopher Parker

Race has traditionally played a key role in many American presidential campaigns. In 2016, Donald Trump has sought to build support through attacks on Mexicans and Muslims (among others). While bigoted arguments alienate many observers, could Trump’s campaign actually advance the national conversation about race, thereby helping to heal the country’s racial division?

Christopher Parker is an Associate Professor in the department of political science at the University of Washington. He is the author of Change They Can’t Believe In: The Tea Party and Reactionary Politics in America and Fighting for Democracy: Black Veterans and the Struggle Against White Supremacy in the Postwar South.
