Minutes of the Executive Committee Meeting of Democrats Abroad Guatemala

Thursday, April 20, 2017 at 4:00 pm at Dave Evans’s home

Per our bylaws (paragraph 19.3), all meetings are open to all members.

Call to order – 4:05 PM

Attendance: John Chudy, Chair; Kee Kalwara, Events/Membership/Fundraising Coordinator; Dave Evans, Member at Large; Traci Styner, Lake Atitlán MeetUp Chair; Hyungjoon Jin, Guatemala City Meetup Chair; Rachael Shenyo, Occidente Group Meetup Deputy Chair; Mary Reynolds, DAGT member.

Approval of agenda (minutes of last meeting March 23, 2017). Approved unanimously with amendment to agenda to include item on naming a volunteer coordinator for DAGT.

Treasurer’s Report – Current networth is Q396.50 of which Q309.00 is a credit at Revue. Actual cash on hand is Q87.50.

Media Contact and Communications Chair : Mary Reynolds, a member who resides in Guatemala City, has expressed interest. Mary introduced herself and confirmed her interest in taking on the duties of Media Contact. She teaches secondary English at Colegio Maya, and is there for at least this year. Kee moved that Mary be appointed and Dave Evans seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. John will go by Revue and Que Pasa during the next week to inform them of Mary’s appointment as Media Contact with DAGT and leave her contact information. Dave mentioned a Guatemalan friend who would be a very good source of contact information among Guatemalan media that could be useful to Mary. He will follow up on that.

Events for 2017

Film Series Update

Trumbo. Casa Convento Concepción (CCC) Friday, April 21 at 6:30 pm. Details seem to be taken care of. We are hoping for a good turnout.

It was decided that our next movie feature will be First Grader, a bio-pic about a Kenyan octogenarian who starts first grade late in life because he never had a chance to before. Date, time and place will be determined following our experience with Trumbo at CCC

Discussion groups: Engaging Millennials. Hyung will continue working on this presentation with Rachael and others.

DAGT members' voting states. Develop a system to let members know what’s going on in their states or Congress, e.g., email blasts when certain representatives are voting on key issues (Annie’s suggestion). We discussed briefly how this might work. John will follow up with Annie before the May meeting.

DPCA meeting in Washington DC, May 12-14. WebEx and in Person

Volunteer Coordinator for DAGT. Adrianne George, DA Global Volunteer Coordinator, is asking country committees for names and contact information for their volunteer coordinators. Kee will talk with Elisabeth Shackelford, who had expressed interest in being active with DAGT.
