Welcome to the official branch of the Democratic Party for Americans living in Italy.

Who we are

Founded in 1964, Democrats Abroad is the official overseas branch of the Democratic Party of the United States.

Democrats Abroad members are US citizens living temporarily or permanently outside the United States.

Democrats Abroad consists of 34 recognized Country Committees, plus individual members in more than 100 countries around the globe.

The international governing body of Democrats Abroad is known as the Democratic Party Committee Abroad, or DPCA.

Democrats Abroad is recognized and seated as the equivalent of a State Party within the Democratic National Committee (DNC). Democrats Abroad holds 8 positions on the DNC and sends a voting delegation to the Democratic National Convention to choose our party's presidential candidate.

What we do

Democrats Abroad assists American citizens living overseas to actively participate in every level of the US political process.

Democrats Abroad promotes overseas voting by the millions of Americans living and working outside the United States.

In 2006, Democrats Abroad launched VoteFromAbroad.org - the easiest and most comprehensive solution to the complexities of overseas voting. Accessible in both English and Spanish, VoteFromAbroad.org assists US voters anywhere in the world to register and request an absentee ballot.

In February 2008, Democrats Abroad held its own Global Primary alongside the State primaries and caucuses back home.  Tens of thousands of Americans living abroad took the opportunity to vote in this historic primary where Barack Obama won over 65% of the overseas vote.

Gasland: Film Screening and Discussion

Monday April 16th, 19:00

ACCENT International Center, Piazza dell’Orologio, 7

Democrats Abroad Italy –Rome Chapter, with the kind participation of ACCENT International, invites you
to a special film screening of “Gasland”. Guided discussion and light refreshments to follow.

Gasland (2010) documents one young man’s journey across the United States in search of the truth behind “Fracking”, the newest and possibly most environmentally damaging petroleum
extraction method yet developed. What he finds will shock you!

Hydraulic Fracturing, more commonly known as “fracking”, consists of drilling a well into petroleum containing rock formations, into which highly pressured water and other chemicals are forced to break up the rock and bring the contents to the surface. Recent changes to the Clean Water Act and the Clean Air Act under President Bush exempt this method from regulation. As a result, the chemicals used, many of which are known carcinogens, are not measured or regulated. The result? Polluted ground water and permanent damage to human, domestic and wildlife health.

Many states are considering or have already gone ahead with this dangerous practice; maybe your home state as well. We invite you to educated yourself on this important topic and join us in a discussion on this and other areas of US Energy Policy.

Voter Registration: Democrats Abroad will be manning a Vote from Abroad booth at this event. Voter Registration is a non-partisan activity and we encourage all to register to vote regardless of political affiliation.

      Screening of Gasland

"The largest domestic natural gas drilling boom in history has swept across the United States. The Halliburton-developed drilling technology of "fracking" or hydraulic fracturing has unlocked a "Saudia Arabia of natural gas" just beneath us. But is fracking safe? When filmmaker Josh Fox is asked to lease his land for drilling, he embarks on a cross-country odyssey uncovering a trail of secrets, lies and contamination. A recently drilled nearby Pennsylvania town reports that residents are able to light their drinking water on fire. This is just one of the many absurd and astonishing revelations of a new country called GASLAND. Part verite travelogue, part expose, part mystery, part bluegrass banjo meltdown, part showdown."
