Dear Fellow Democrat,

DAUK just hosted a conference for the Democratic Party Committee Abroad in London that was a tremendous success, thanks to an extraordinary group of volunteers - Team DAUK. Our dozens of Team DAUK participants worked on a series of complex logistics, communications, and technical issues.

They developed and maintained our technological infrastructure, created our welcome pack, facilitated break-out sessions, served as tellers, monitored the WebEx stream, registered guests, assisted at our phone banking demonstration center, and worked on several social events – just to name a few of the tasks that they accomplished.

Most importantly, they provided our guests with a warm welcome and helpful assistance when needed. Their tireless hard work, dedication, and professionalism made all the difference in the keeping the conference running smoothly.

During the three-day conference, we had a special surprise visit from House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who spoke eloquently of the shameful votes that week in Congress on gun reform that put political survival before the safety of children.

Looking forward, we have three special elections coming up in the U.S.: the Massachusetts Senate election for Secretary of State John Kerry's seat, and two House races in South Carolina's first congressional district and Missouri's 8th district.

If you are a voter in any of these special elections, please be sure to register to vote and cast your ballots. Remember - the MOVE Act means that you need to re-register in 2013 for these special elections. Go to www.votefromabroad.org now to request your ballot!

This month we have an exciting talk by Heather Boushey, phone banking, and a highly rated documentary. Join us for these great events. Finally, be sure to mark you calendars for Sunday, June 30. That's the day of our exciting Independence Day celebrations!

DAUK Speaker Series and Phone Banking Event, May 1

Join us in a discussion with Heather Boushey, Chief Economist, Center for American Progress Action Fund, in addressing the issue of economic change and its effect on families. Currently a visiting fellow at the Institute for Public Policy Research in London, Ms Boushey's research focuses on U.S. employment, social policy, and family economic well-being. She co-edited "The Shriver Report: A Woman's Nation Changes Everything" (Simon & Schuster ebook, 2009) and was a lead author of "Bridging the Gaps," a 10-state study about how low- and moderate-income working families are left out of work support programs. Her research has been covered widely in the media, including The New York Times, which called her one of the "most vibrant voices in the field."

  • Time:   7 p.m. Wednesday, May 1
  • Place:  University Women's Club, 2 S Audley St, London W1K 1DB - Nearby Tube stations: Green Park and Marble Arch
  • Cost:   £10 (concessions £5)

Running up to the crucial special Senata election in Massachusetts, we will be phone banking from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Club. Bring your charged-up cellphone and extra minutes to call DAUK members (within the UK) who vote in Massachusetts. We want to reach out to as many voters as possible!

Only U.S. citizens can make payment. Friends of members of DAUK who are not U.S. citizens are welcome, but their admission to the talk must be paid by their host. Please note that these events are closed to the press.

DAUK Film Night: The House I Live In (Late May, Exact Date TBA)

In late May the Film Committee will screen The House I Live In, one of the most acclaimed documentaries of 2012. The House I Live In examines the effects of drug laws on everyone - the dealer, the grieving mother, the jailer and the Federal judge inside America's longest war.

A Sundance Festival review summed up the critical reaction: "Comprehensive in scope, heart wrenching in its humanity, and brilliant in its thesis, Jarecki's new film grabs viewers and shakes them to their core. The House I Live In is not only the definitive film on the failure of America's drug war, but it is also a masterpiece filled with hope and the potential to effect change."

Don't miss the opportunity to view this film and discuss these pressing issues with DAUK members. Watch for emails confirming the date, venue, the after-screening speaker, and booking details. To find out more about the film, go to http://www.thehouseilivein.org

Independence Day Picnic

Our renowned Independence Day picnic is fast approaching. It will be held on Sunday, June 30th from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. in Portman Square. Last year, over 1,000 Americans joined together to celebrate Independence Day with music, food, and good times.

Why not volunteer this year? You can volunteer in a wide variety of areas, including check-in, voter registration, DAUK outreach, information tables, decorations, and children's actitivites. Please email the volunteers team at volunteers2013@democratsabroad.org.uk to find out more. Include your contact details and tell us when and how you'd like to help. Even if you can only donate an hour or two of your time on the day, it will be great help, good fun, and a chance to meet and work together with other dedicated Democrats.

Book your place at the picnic now at http://dauk-picnic-2013-eorg.eventbrite.com/
