LETTER FROM THE CHAIR

Dear Fellow Democrat,

March is turning out to be a busy month for DAUK. Besides our usual speakeasies and the YPN pub night, we will be hosting a Film Night with a panel of speakers and holding our Biennial General Meeting with elections.

In April, DAUK will have the honor of hosting the Democratic Party Committee Abroad (DPCA) Conference in London. The three-day conference brings together leaders and members of our Democratic family from around the world. This is our chance to be ambassadors to the DPCA and show them the best that we have to offer.

We would like to provide our DPCA guests with a warm welcome and friendly assistance ahead of and throughout the Conference. If you would like to volunteer for the Conference, please send an email to volunteers2013@democratsabroad.org.uk.

Please mark your calendars and join us – your participation makes all the difference.

Rob Carolina

Chair, Democrats Abroad UK

March 22: DAUK Film Night: We're Not Broke

Join us for the film screening and discussion of the documentary We're Not Broke.
We may have averted the January fiscal cliff, but we now face a March fiscal showdown over sequestration – the automatic implementation of federal spending cuts.  Debate continues, often rages, about the roles and relative mix of revenue (taxation) and spending cuts in deficit reduction. As the Capitol Hill blame game continues, American families are faced with stark choices.

This film's title, We're Not Broke (http://werenotbrokemovie.com), indicates its analysis. The filmmakers focus on corporate tax avoidance, a recent high profile topic in both the U.K. and U.S. media. The film sheds light on issues surrounding legal tax avoidance by corporate multinationals, how it negatively impacts ordinary taxpayers and the U.S. campaigns challenging this.

We have some great people leading the discussion: Tax Justice Network Director John Christensen and DAUK and Economics Policy Action Network member Carol Moore whose career has included work in the legal, financial and voluntary sectors.

Place:   London School of Economics, Aldwych
Room CLM.2.02, 2nd floor, Clement House
(Building CLM in lower right corner of map)

OTHER DAUK ANNOUNCEMENTS

DAUK Policy Action Network

Please check out DAUK Policy Action Network's monthly updates on energy and environmental issues from our Washington Correspondent, Elaine Emling, at www.daukpan.org.uk/EES_Monthup. For those passionate about environmental issues, last month's article highlighting important victories in the Senate and House races and key Committees to watch will prove a valuable read; a new one is in the pipeline. Our Washington Correspondent would love feedback: short comments indicating whether this is information you want and what additional resources you would like. Write to pancoordinator@daukpan.org.uk and all messages will be forwarded to Elaine Emling.

We are looking for people to contribute to the website – writing, updating, posting events – and also for people interested in planning events around policy, whether small or large, formal or informal. Many of our key people have now moved abroad, so now is a good time to get involved to refocus and redirect our work. Please contact Elaine Capizzi at pancoordinator@daukpan.org.uk to pitch ideas or volunteer.
