Once again! Tell your Senators to vote NO to Graham-Cassidy

In a last-ditch effort to destroy the Affordable Care Act, with no discussion or analysis, Senate Republicans have introduced the Graham-Cassidy plan which is nothing more than a state-by-state payout, manipulated to benefit Republican voting states and hurt Democratic voting states – all the while destroying access to affordable and adequate health insurance for tens of millions of people. Clearly the GOP is rushing to meet the September 30 deadline to pass something, anything, with only 51 votes.

According to PFAW (People for the American Way), the Graham-Cassidy plan:

  1. REPEALS health care -- but rather than propose a viable replacement, it hands block grants to the states, giving them autonomous management of their health care program that will EXPIRE in 2026.
  2. Slashes Medicaid expansion funding by a THIRD by 2026 and completely eliminates it by 2027.
  3. Entirely scraps subsidies for low-income people on Obamacare.
  4. Allows insurers to charge older customers FIVE TIMES more than younger ones.
  5. ENDS any protections against discriminating against patients with preexisting conditions leaving them vulnerable to skyrocketing rates or complete loss of coverage.

We know better than to trust the rhetoric without looking at the fine print – the Graham-Cassidy plan is NOT a solution and we must voice our disproval ASAP! We’ve done it before, let’s do it again – CALL YOUR SENATORS NOW!

Tell your Senators to vote NO on the Graham-Cassidy bill with a message like the one suggested by the Daily Kos – or your own words:

Hello, my name is xxxx calling from zip code xxxx. I am angry the Senate is considering a bill to slash Medicaid, defund Planned Parenthood and deny health insurance to millions. Please vote NO on Graham-Cassidy. I am a constituent, and I will remember your vote.

You can find your senators’ phone numbers and email address here.

To read more on the Graham-Cassidy proposal, here are links to a basic outline in the Washington Post and an editorial from The Nation.

We’d love to hear how your call went.

Previous ALERT - Call now to stop the Senate's heartless healthcare bill

medical-563427__480.jpg

The Senate Republicans have released their heartless healthcare "reform" bill that devastates the poor, ill, elderly and infirm by either taking away their access to health insurance outright, or making it so expensive that it is unaffordable. The bill:

* ends guaranteed protections critical for people with pre-existing conditions, by allowing states to opt-out of covering essential health benefits, which means insurance companies can stop offering plans that cover the kind of services people with pre-existing conditions need

* give billions of dollars in tax breaks to the wealthy and corporations by making the deepest cuts to Medicaid in its 52-year history

* alters Medicaid in a way that threatens the well-being of low-income families across the country

* has the effect of driving up the price for consumers for plans that offer the broader coverage they need, likely to the point where no one could afford it

NOW is the time to call your Senators and tell them this bill CANNOT PASS. The Senate will vote on the bill in the coming week. Call your Senator directly or else 1-202-224-3121 via Skype or your cell phone.

  • Urge them to commit to vote against any bill that will result in anyone losing coverage.
  • Urge them to commit to vote against any bill that does not guarantee people with pre-existing conditions will not see higher premiums.
  • Urge them to vote against to any bill that eliminates funding for Medicaid.

If possible, follow-up your call with an email to your Senator.

We can defeat this mean, hateful and harmful legislation. It will only take a few minutes of your time. CALL NOW. 1-202-224-3121.

As our former President, Barack Obama, wrote on facebook today“The Senate bill, unveiled today, is not a health care bill. It’s a massive transfer of wealth from middle-class and poor families to the richest people in America. It hands enormous tax cuts to the rich and to the drug and insurance industries, paid for by cutting health care for everybody else. Those with private insurance will experience higher premiums and higher deductibles, with lower tax credits to help working families cover the costs, even as their plans might no longer cover pregnancy, mental health care, or expensive prescriptions. Discrimination based on pre-existing conditions could become the norm again. Millions of families will lose coverage entirely.”

Democrats Abroad Resists with Rome for Trump Visit

At the end of May, The President travels to Saudi Arabia, Israel, Italy, and Belgium. These past months, he has caused outrage all over the world: he is dividing and excluding people; he is denying climate change and intimidating the media; he is phasing out solidarity.
Democrats Abroad is happy to announce that we will be co-hosting a protest with AEPC and Womens March Rome to not only denounce the horrible policies that the current administration is pushing for but to also state loud and clear that we stand united #UnitedWeStand for #ImmigrantsRights, #WomensRights, #HumanRights, the #Environment, #Healthcare #FreedomofReligion #FreePress and #Democracy.
We not only denounce the horrible policies that the current administration is pushing for but... we state loud and clear that we stand united
Protesters in Rome will meet on May 23 at 19:30 in Piazza Bologna. DA Italy Executive Committee Member (Counsel), Michael Stiefel will be representing DA Italy as contact for members planning on participating. We will be covered by several media outlets including CNN!  We cannot keep quiet and we invite US Citizens, Italians and all global citizens to come together to make some noise.

President Barack Obama's visit to Milan

On May 9, Barack Obama spoke in Milan at the Global Food Innovation Summit, and eight members of Democrats Abroad were fortunate enough to be in the auditorium (with 2,000 other people). Past and present DA-Italy leaders Ginger DiGaetano, Claudia Flisi, Theresa Morelli, and Ryan Turner* were in attendance, as were Italy members Laurel Evans, Amie Louie, and  Vicki Satlow.  Evelyn J. Kim, a member of DA-Denmark was also present.

This was President Obama’s first time in Italy since leaving the White House, and the media covered his appearance as if he were a rock star. So did the audience, which gave him a boisterous standing ovation as he arrived on stage.

He spoke knowledgeably for about 20 minutes on food and climate change. Then he and his former White House chef Sam Kass sat down for an hour to discuss this theme in more detail, plus the Paris Agreement, the nature of leadership, the impact of technology on food, work, and world security, the politics versus the science of GMOs, the importance of “climate-smart eating habits”, the pros and cons of industrial farming, the role of the private sector in agriculture, and why he and Michelle hope to come back to Italy “often” in the future.

Obama was eloquent on every subject and smoothly summoned facts and figures to back his assertions. He emphasized his desire to work with young people because they will be the policy makers in the years ahead. He notably avoided direct comment on current US policy, other than conceding that he disagreed with it and that he hoped the Paris Agreement would be respected. He ended on a note of optimism, observing that history does not move in a straight line but rather zigs and zags before progress can be achieved. (This is a paraphrase of a famous quote by Dr. Martin Luther King, "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice.")

...history does not move in a straight line but rather zigs and zags before progress can be achieved.

The optimism that welled through the hall when Obama finished was palpable. DA – Italy is optimistic that both Obamas will return soon and inspire all our members to bend the Democratic arc to justice, starting with the midterm elections of 2018.

Many thanks to:
• 3-D food printer Bocusini for donating a delicious marzipan bust of Obama to Democrats Abroad (see below). It will be up for auction at DA-Milan’s upcoming wine-tasting event on May 27, so you can taste Obama’s visit without having been there.
• Stefano Caccavari, founder of artisanal mill Mulinum, for his generous assistance to DA-Italy at the Obama event.

* Ginger DiGaetano is current vice chair of DA-Italy. Claudia Flisi is a past chair and vice-chair of DA-Milan. Theresa Morelli founded the DA-Milan chapter and is former DA-Milan and DA-Italy chair and is currently DA-Milan co-chair. Ryan Turner is current chair of DA-Italy.

ACTION ALERT: Take ACTION to save healthcare - Round 2!

Be_A_Mosquito.jpg

Like a zombie out of a horror movie, “Trumpcare” has been resurrected.  Republicans are determined to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act.  This time, states will be able to waive the “essential health benefits” provision.  Maternity care?  Emergency services?  Mental health issues?  No longer provided for.  People with pre-existing conditions will be charged far higher for insurance, essentially pricing them out of the market.  Finally, the elderly will become a cash cow for insurance companies.

Republican lawmakers recognize that the plan is a disaster: Congress and their family members would be exempted from the repeal.

If Trumpcare passes, millions of Americans will lose their health insurance.  Jimmy Kimmel has made a heartfelt plea for why people like his son, who was born last week with a congenital heart defect, should not be denied healthcare.  That's what is at stake here: By fighting for the ACA, you can help save millions of lives.

Now is the time to act!  Here’s a message you can share with your representatives:

“Hello, my name is _______.  I’m contacting Senator/ Representative _______ to urge her to vote against the repeal of the Affordable Care Act.  The new GOP bill will take away healthcare from the people who need it the most, including pregnant women, the elderly and individuals with pre-existing conditions.  Thank you for your time.”

HOW TO CALL:

The Capitol Hill switchboard number is 202-224-3121.  It has an automated system to get you to your Representative or Senator. If you can't get through you can call the district office (http://www.house.gov/representatives/find/). The link will also help you find their email address.

Taking action doesn't have to be complicated! Calling a U.S. number from abroad is simple and inexpensive.  If you have a Skype account, you can buy a small amount of credit and call directly from your cell phone or computer.    You're not too small to make a difference! BE A MOSQUITO!
