Kathryn (Katie) Solon was re-elected International Chair of Democrats Abroad in 2015 with a background making her an ideal choice to lead Democrats Abroad--the official arm of the Democratic Party for U.S. citizens living outside the USA.

Katie has lived overseas for 34 years in far-flung regions around the globe, including Southeast Asia, Central America, Africa and central Europe.

She served as a U.S. Foreign Service Officer, as a with NGOs and international organizations as a manager of refugee and relief programs, and for the Fulbright Commission. Her overseas postings included the Philippines, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, El Salvador, Croatia/Bosnia and Somalia, for which she received the State Department’s Superior Honor Award.

Katie has a BSFS from Georgetown University and a MPA from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard. Born in Nebraska, she was raised in Colorado, Montana, New Mexico and Oregon.

Katie one of the founders (2003) and a former chair of Democrats Abroad Austria, was instrumental in expanding the scope and stature of that committee. In 2013, she moved to Bavaria with her German husband and their teenage son. Before her election as International Chair, Katie served as International Treasurer and chair of the global fundraising committee from 2011-2013.

Her roots in Democratic politics go back to high school and college, when she campaigned for state and national candidates. In 1980, she joined Ted Kennedy’s presidential campaign national field staff. Her support for the values of the Democratic Party have informed her life and work as a U.S. citizen abroad.
