1) From the Chair
After a very successful visit by Governor Tim Kaine, the Chair of the Democratic National Committee in February, we enter a relatively quiet time for DAUK.
Behind the scenes, however, work is underway preparing for the midterm elections this November. Our voter registration efforts continue, and as we move toward the campaigning season this year, the pace of activities will quicken as we seek to remind all our members to request and cast their absentee ballots.
This year, we will be making a targeted effort aimed particularly at our members who vote in critical House and Senate races. Work is already underway to identify DAUK members from those states and districts. In this way, we can continue to make a difference in close races. Just ask Senator Franken of Minnesota, Senator Begich of Alaska or Congressman Murphy of NY 20 - in the past two years, Democratic votes from abroad made the difference between victory and defeat in all three of those races.
You can see how important our Get Out the Vote efforts are, but we could not do it without our voter registration volunteers. If you can help in this effort, please respond to the call for volunteers below.
2) Speakeasy Gatherings across the UK
Our regularly scheduled Speakeasies are a chance to meet like-minded Americans, have a drink, talk politics, or just make new friends. Speakeasies are informal and held throughout the country, usually once a month. Drop by and join us - and bring a friend!

3) 2010 Midterm Elections – Just One Task!
The November mid-term elections are fast approaching and we are keenly aware that many Democrats in the House and Senate will face tough races. We know that our overseas voter registration campaign can deliver votes that assure victory in close races. We must not be complacent if we hope to see Democratic values implemented at both the national and local level. We are asking Democrats Abroad members to do JUST ONE TASK to help get out the vote. Here are some ideas:
- Canvas in your local area; hand out leaflets to Americans and those that know Americans
- Join a DA Phone-a-thon to call UK based Democrats from key districts
- Get trained to register voters at 6:00pm on March 16th just before the DA Council meeting or on March 31st before the DAUK Voter Registration Committee meeting
- Research organizations where Americans gather. Easy to do in your free time!
- Let us know where we can find Americans at work, socializing or pursuing leisure activities
If you want to get more involved, please come to our Democrats Abroad Voter Registration Committee meeting on March 31st from 6:30 to 8:00pm in central London. There will be Voter Registration training from 6:00 to 6:30pm just before the meeting. Please email DAUKVote@DemocratsAbroad.org.uk if you are ready to take on YOUR ONE TASK or maybe more!
4) UK Phone Bank – Please Help!
DAUK has the potential to make a big difference in close Senate and House elections this year. We have thousands of voters within our membership who vote in critical swing states or districts, and who are eager to vote to support the Democratic Party’s agenda to improve the lives of all Americans. But... experience suggests that too many of our members don’t know that they can vote, need help getting in their ballot, or just plain want to be reminded that there is an important election coming up.
That’s where you come in.
We intend to call every one of our members from competitive districts and states this year to be SURE they are able to vote. Our phone bank effort will kick off on March 20th, and will be aimed initially at voters in critical states or districts. The more help we can get the more calls we can make, the more votes we can secure, the more races we can win! Can you volunteer for any or all of the following?
1) Commit to making calls from a central location in London on any date starting on March 20th? Our phone banks run from 6-9pm on weeknights, 11-5pm on weekends, and we expect to be calling for several weeks.
2) Serve as Phone bank captain, being trained to manage a group of callers and take responsibility for one or more nights of calling?
3) Help with logistics, sourcing venues, managing documents and generally work behind the scenes with this effort?
This is a fun and effective way to make a big difference in this year’s outcome.

5) DAUK Council Meeting – March 16th
Calling all DAUK Council members and others who wish to attend! Please save the date for the next Council meeting on March 16th - time and venue to be announced.
We will be launching our targeted campaign to help turn out the Democratic vote overseas in the November Congressional elections, particularly in critical Senate and House races. If you want to learn to register American voters and help get out the vote, come to the DAUK Council Meeting a half hour early at 6pm. You will receive supplies and training to help deliver votes for Democrats!
6) Democrats in Scotland Meeting
Democrats in Scotland are holding the regularly scheduled meeting on Saturday, March 20th at 11am at The Forest Cafe in Edinburgh, 3 Bristo Place. Please come join us!
