Would Bush have won the 2000 Presidential election had the US Supreme Court not intervened? And why does it matter today?
Justice Paul Stevens said, "The (per curiam opinion) by the majority of this Court can only lend credence to the most cynical appraisal of the work of judges throughtout the land. It is confidence in the men and women who administer the judical system that is the backbone of the rule of law. Time will one day heal the wound to that confidence that will be inflicted by today's decision. One thing, however, is certain. Althought we may never know with complete certainty the identity of the winner of this year's Presidential election, the identity of the loser is perfectly clear. It is the nation's confidence in the judge as guardian of the rule of law."
The prize that I reference is not the victory nor the stealth of the 2000 Presidential election. The prize is the US Supreme Court. Yes, Presidents have the privilege to nominate but equally important and necessary are the members of the House and Senate. Make no mistake, the conservatives have long identified the prize, and they are counting. Here's a list of who's who on the US Supreme Court. If you know someone who is sitting on the fence about re-registering to vote and requesting their ballots for the 2010 Mid-term elections, please forward this reminder to them. Remind them what's really at stake here.
Justice Roberts is 55 and was nomintated by Bush.
Justice Scalia is 74 and was nominated by Reagan.
Justice Kennedy is 73 and was nominated by Reagan.
Justice Thomas is 61 and was nominated by Bush.
Justice Ginsburg is 77 and was nominated by Clinton.
Justice Breyer is 71 and was nominated by Clinton.
Justice Alito is 50 and was nominated by Bush.
Justice Sotomayor is 56 and was nominated by Obama.
Justice Kegan is 50 and was nominated by Obama.
Dear fellow Democrats, now is not the time to teach those erring Democrats a lesson. There is more at stake than meets the eye. A new law has been enacted and everyone must re-register to vote. If you are in doubt, please contact a member of the voter registration team. They are better trained to answer why you must re-register.
