Democrats Abroad Edmonton Planning Meeting

Dear Edmonton Members of Democrats Abroad,

I have just come home from an EXCELLENT planning meeting with 6 DA - Ed. members who expressed willingness to get involved. After introductions (Trevor, Robin, Harold, Louise, Jan, Sue, and me, Marilyn), we learned that many states are represented, Illinois, Michigan, Colorado, Texas, New York State, Washington... Several other members were prevented from attending at the last minute, which was unfortunate. If and when we plan another face to face committee meeting, it will be great to have others join us.

We discussed how our local chapter can be improved from the "bare bones" services that I have supplied:

Trevor volunteered to open up a Face book site for Democrats Abroad.

Jan will be our publicity expert, as she is a journalist with connections.

Louise will be the web mistress for our local website.

Sue and Harold will collaborate on a letter to the Editor about the importance of this US election.

Robin has recommended  2 documentary films that we could screen for members and the public.

Sue will manage the monthly conference calls with Democrats Abroad - Canada.

Many activities and events were discussed. It was decided that we would not do fundraising or plan activities that were costly, at least for the time being. The question, "What is the age and interests of our membership?" gave us pause. Rather than decide now what activities to plan, the first step is to ask members what they prefir. Feedback is appreciated on these ideas:

Pub nights to view candidates' debates and election night.

CBC interactive space viewing opportunities for TV events.

July 4th picnic for members and other Americans.

An "open mic" debate on Obama vs. Clinton, and/or challenge Republicans Abroad to a debate with us.

Information table for voter registration at the Bill Clinton lecture at Shaw Conf. Centre on June 20 or Folk Fest, or Heritage Festival, etc..

I am very happy to have a working team with so many talents and ideas. Thanks so much, Marilyn Gaa
