Resolution of the Executive Committee on Burma
Resolution of the Executive Committee of Democrats Abroad Adopted by the Executive Committee of the Democratic Party Committee Abroad, October 2, 2007, by telephone conference. Whereas in the past week, the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) of Burma has ordered the army and police to viciously attack unarmed protesters, including Buddhist monks, in Rangoon and other cities in Burma, resulting in the killing scores of people and injuring many others; Whereas the protesters in Burma have continually called for restoration of democratic rule there which has been denied by the military since 1962; Whereas Democrats Abroad, like democratic organizations from around the world that uphold the principles and importance of democracy, has a strong interest in the success of democracy in Burma; Whereas the United States has an important role to play in leading global opinion to respond to the recent events in Burma; Therefore be it resolved that Democrats Abroad forcefully urges the President and Congress to: 1. publicly condemn in the strongest possible terms the ongoing brutal crackdown against the unarmed protesters in Burma supporting a return to democratic rule; 2. proactively engage with Burma’s neighboring countries, the Association of Southeast Asia Nations (ASEAN), the European Union, and other Governments to urge them to call on the SPDC to show restraint, order the army back to the barracks, cease all attacks by the authorities against the protesters, and release all political prisoners currently being detained. 3. bring the issue of Burma before the UN Security Council and seek passage of a UNSC resolution addressing the situation in Burma; 4. support an initiative of the UN Secretary-General to use his good offices to mediate the dispute in Burma, and move Burma towards national reconciliation which sees the restoration of a democratic system of government in the country.
