SATURDAY MAY 30

Maison des Associations, Place des Orphelins,

1 A, Place Orphelins, 67000 Strasbourg

Starting at 2 PM

The film "Who Killed the Electric Car" relates the failure a few years ago of GM's attempt to launch the EV-1 - despite its success with test drivers. This highly praised "murder mystery and call to arms" (NY TImes) examines the roles played by the Californian government, car manufacturers, oil interests, drivers and competitors in this extraordinary episode which ended with the quiet destruction of thousands of new, radically efficient electric vehicles in the 1990s. Today, the development of electric cars is once again the object of attention in the media.

President Obama has included green jobs in the Stimulus Package.  But will a clean-energy economy in the 21st century build a green economy that is strong enough to lift many people out of poverty? To bring this question to bear on the discussion, read Van Jones' book The Green Collar Economy and/or get familiar with the Green For All program http://www.democratsabroad.org/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=63144&qid=6092961

This will be followed by group discussion led by two experts:

·         Candice Stevens, former Sustainable Development Advisor, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) as well as Chair of the DAFrance Environmental Policy Group

She will tell us about the sustainable response to the financial crisis which integrates economic, environmental and social concerns.   Barack Obama is trying to do this by including provisions for health care, renewable energy, transport infrastructure, and green jobs in the stimulus package.  But he is encountering a lot of resistance in Congress and in parts of his own staff

·         Peter Durante, UK-based advisor on energy and environmental issues to politicians, NGOs, academics and industry groups.

He is a member of DA-UK's Environment and Energy Security Policy Action Network, and has spent over 8 years in the energy industry, currently working as a CO2 trader. In addition, he is a pro-bono advisor on energy and environmental issues to various politicians, NGOs, academics and industry groups. He has a keen interest in the potential (and challenges) around the electrification of transport and its relationship to renewable energy, as well as reducing CO2 and dependence on oil.
