Truly amazing events have besieged our country since W took office in January, 2001. As the record shows, we have been led in many destructive directions that have severely damaged the reputation of the United States of America. Acts such as White House staff signing off on torture to leaks of classified information and using fear to manipulate a political agenda based on hatred and violence to preemptive war give us pause.

How has America strayed so far from its former foreign and domestic policy positions? We Americans living abroad watch with dread, incredulity and shame at these actions taken by our countrymen in the name of democracy and freedom. Indeed the irony is maddening, the suffering and cost of human life, sickening.

Thankfully, the tide seems to be turning but please do not underestimate the callous bitterness and greed that drives the likes of our current administration to take whatever steps necessary to propel us into and maintain bellicose engagements around the world. Why? Well, for one reason, war is profitable; many make reams of money from the commerce of death and destruction.

We in Hong Kong address these issues and many others by holding monthly meetings and inviting speakers to engage our membership in discussion of the many topics affecting the U.S. and the world. We are also committed to getting out the vote. In 2004 we sponsored a world-wide effort that resulted in the registration of 100,000 absentee voters and sponsored many GOTV events around our city. As we now approach the 2006 mid-term elections, we urge you to request your absentee ballot at www.votefromabroad.org

How can you be a part? Come meet us and get involved. If you are too busy to attend meetings but want to contribute financially, please send a check to the address below.

You can also tell your friends to join us http://hk.democratsabroad.org/join.php Once on our mailing list, they will receive the information they need to register to vote absentee from Hong Kong for the crucial 2006 mid-term elections and the presidential election of 2008.

Please email me directly with your ideas for good places to meet, methods for reaching more Americans in Hong Kong and any other comments or suggestions you may have.

I know you want to do something to take back our country.
