DEMOCRATS ABROAD TO SHOW SOLIDARITY

FOR WISCONSIN’S WORKERS

Rally Planned,  Resolution Passed

Washington, DC— Today, Democrats Abroad announced their solidarity with the workers of Wisconsin, with many country committees signing on to a resolution denouncing attacks on workers’ rights.  Democrats Abroad Switzerland has organized a rally of solidarity for Monday, April 4, 2011 at 17:30 at the Place des Nations. The timing of the rally is significant, as it takes place on the 43rd anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in Memphis, Tennessee.  Dr. King had traveled to Memphis to stand in solidarity with striking sanitation workers. Democrats Abroad is the official arm of the Democratic Party for Americans living outside of the United States.

“Our moral imperative now is to restore the rights of the public work force of Wisconsin to organize.  Dr. King would be proud of our actions and it is in his honor that I welcome this opportunity for all Democrats Abroad to stand in solidarity worldwide to urge that workplace justice be restored to Wisconsin’s public employees,” said Kenneth Sherman, International Chair of Democrats Abroad.

“This rally and our resolution have particular meaning to me.  In 1968, upon learning of Dr. King’s assassination, I flew from Buffalo, NY to Memphis to give support to the striking sanitation workers.  I stayed for a week in Memphis taking part in rallies and standing in picket lines to support the rights of sanitation workers to organize.  At the end of the week, I joined tens of thousands of people as we marched to honor Dr. King,” continued Mr. Sherman.

“We are proud to be a part of this event, organized around the theme ‘We Are One’ to show that these issues are being followed not only domestically, but across the world,” explains Maya Samara, Chair of Democrats Abroad, Switzerland. “We are joined in our resolution action by Democrats Abroad worldwide in places such as Israel, France, Germany, Guatemala, Spain, Ukraine, Thailand and Canada, as we ourselves join with trade unions across the country and around the world.”
