House Judiciary to Hold First ERA Hearing in 36 Years

For the first time in nearly four decades, the House Judiciary Committee will hold an official hearing on the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). This exciting development exemplifies the growing momentum behind finally ratifying the ERA in the Constitution.

The hearing will be held Tuesday, April 30, 2019, at 10:00 a.m in room 2141 of the Rayburn House Office Building, Washington, DC 20515. This hearing is an opportunity for constitutional scholars and advocates to address the ongoing need for the ERA. The fact is that the progress we have made towards women’s equality can be lost at any time because those advances depend on legislation that can be (and has been) weakened or repealed by Congress without this amendment.

“The ERA is as simple as it is necessary. Nearly 230 years after our Constitution was ratified, and nearly 100 years since the first ERA was introduced, it is shocking the Constitution still fails to expressly guarantee gender equality,” House Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler,
(D-New York) , said in a statement.

Over the past 53 years, NOW has mounted countless actions on many fronts to promote, achieve and protect the equal rights of women and girls in all aspects of social, political, and economic life, including advocating for the ERA. With only one state left for ratification, our work is more important than ever.

More details about related events and television coverage for the hearing will be made available soon. For additional information on the ERA, please see the links below:
