Global Youth Caucus Solidarity with Workers

A number of promising labor movements are underway throughout the U.S. For workers, the COVID-19 pandemic intensified a number of pre-existing grievances: inadequate and stagnating wages, demanding schedules, workplace safety concerns, and the notorious two-tiered wage system. The pandemic has also brought workers new leverage. Roughly 25,000 workers have recently walked off their jobs and joined picket lines, including workers at Kelloggs’s, John Deere, and Kroger. Even still, 90% of wage and salary workers are not unionized. Workers need more union support, experienced leaders, and strike funds.

Join the DA France and DA Global Youth Caucuses on Wednesday January 19th at 7PM CET for our virtual event to learn more about these movements and write letters of support to these workers as well as letters to the U.S. Department of Labor. We will provide letter templates and mailing addresses, all you need is a pen and paper! RSVP to receive Zoom link.

    Scared to Debt!

Film Screening & Panel Discussion with Filmmaker

[Note: film can be viewed anytime between January 27th-31st!]

Currently, 45 million borrowers are saddled with close to $1.9 trillion in federal student loan debt in the United States. The Biden Administration has extended the CARES ACT payment pause until May 1st, 2022. Many borrowers perceive the decision as kicking the can down the road. They remain victims of predatory loan practices within a corrupt system that profits while increasing their debt far beyond their ability to pay it.

View the award-winning Sallie Mae Not documentary, episode one of the Scared to Debt documentary film by Michael Camoin, and join him and others for a panel discussion to learn the chilling reality of student loan corruption in America and options to confront it effectively.

    Panelists:

How to watch film and participate in panel discussion:

Watch the film in advance on your own [January 27th to 31st] via the easy access link you will receive when you RSVP below. The film is 41 minutes long. No fee/donation is necessary.

    THEN

Join the panel discussion on Zoom on Monday, January 31st, at 12:00pm to 1:30pm ET, 6:00pm to 7:30pm CET, 9:00pm to 10:30pm Dubai time. [A link to the recording of the panel discussion will be shared with those who register and are unable to attend the discussion.]

RSVP below for your free film screening access, panel discussion Zoom link, and invitation to submit a question for the panel discussion.

** Double your impact to get out the vote for Democrats**

For a limited time, a generous donor in Asia Pacific will double your donation!

Join with others today to win for Democrats up and down the ballot, including Congressional Progressive Caucus Members who are committed to student debt relief for borrowers in the United States – If you are able, please consider giving $4.50, $45 or anything in between to help us reach our goal of 45 donations in recognition of the 45 million American student debt borrowers. Please donate here today. Thank you!

Call for Singers: DA Germany Sea Shanty

Avast, me hearties! Calling all swabbies and mates with an interest in choral singing and a smartphone! DA Germany is pursuing a sea-shanty project with a GOTV twist. We’ve written a parody version of the extremely popular song "Wellerman" centered around the importance of voting from abroad. We have a simple arrangement with 5 parts (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Baritone and Bass), MIDI rehearsal tracks and straightforward recording instructions for people who would like to learn it, record it and have it edited together as a choral piece.

Dash Nesbitt has generously agreed to serve as conductor and Daniel Hoever-Eckardt has consented to take on the tenor solo line, so we only need to collect a virtual choir for a full sound on the chorus. Depending on how much interest there is in this project, we can hold one or two sessions for Q&A or troubleshooting regarding the music, in lieu of a rehearsal. If you choose to participate, you are giving Democrats Abroad permission to use the video for its purposes.

Please fill out this form to get started. Once we have your contact information and part preference, we’ll send you rehearsal materials so you can start recording. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to e-mail us at [email protected].

    Justice has been delivered

Statement by Angela Fobbs, Global Black Caucus Chair, and Julia Bryan, Democrats Abroad Global Chair

Justice has been delivered to George Floyd and his family, and we can all breathe a sigh of relief - for now.

We must take this moment to not only deliver justice for the dead but to protect the living. We must help make our country a place where we can all breathe freely, a place where the color of our skin does not put us at risk.

Philonise Floyd said after the verdict, "As an African American, we usually never get justice."

    This inequality cannot stand.

The House has passed the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. It is time for the Senate to do so too. Democrats and Republicans must rise to the challenge of our times, unite our United States behind this issue, and transform policing in America.

Our moral compass is bending towards justice. It’s time to put policies in place to make this transformation complete. The time is now.

As many of you know, Democrats Abroad has been a big part of my life since I moved to Germany seven(!) years ago, and it’s remarkable what the organization has accomplished in that time! This past election cycle, we engaged Americans abroad like never before and delivered decisive votes in races across the United States.

But as they say, “after the election is before the election”, and it’s important to me that we continue setting up Democrats for success in 2022. As I start this next year of my life, I invite you to join me in making a contribution to Democrats Abroad, an organization near and dear to me.

Donations are made to Democrats Abroad (Democratic Party Committee Abroad) and not to any candidate for Federal Office.
