🎥 The film: The Lady Bird Diaries (2023) — 1 hr 40 min documentary by award-winning filmmaker Dawn Porter (John Lewis: Good Trouble).

  • Porter notes that the film may be of particular interest to Democrats Abroad members, offering a unique perspective on the monumental changes of the 1960s — including the push toward the Voting Rights Act — all through the observations of a First Lady thrust unexpectedly into national leadership.

Official Synopsis:
From award-winning filmmaker Dawn Porter comes The Lady Bird Diaries, a groundbreaking all-archival documentary about Lady Bird Johnson, one of the most influential yet least understood First Ladies.
Drawn from 123 hours of revealing audio diaries she recorded during her husband’s administration, the film recasts Lady Bird as an astute observer, a savvy political strategist, and a crucial behind-the-scenes force during one of the most tumultuous eras in modern American history.

From The Guardian’s review:
“[Being a first lady] is traditionally a feminine thing … And those things are worthy,” Porter said. “Johnson, though, occupied herself with more than rose gardens. She was a shadow politician, serving as the president’s adviser as well as his tutor, even giving her husband grades on his speeches.”

Finding archival footage ...was a treasure hunt. When they searched for ‘Lady Bird Johnson’, they hardly found any footage. Porter had better luck when she searched for the names of other people who had been on the scenes of Johnson’s recounting. “She’s not noted in the description of the footage, yet she’s right there in the middle of all of these events, and I think that’s the story for a lot of women.”
