G-Man by Beverly Gage

On Tuesday November 12 we'll meet on Zoom to discuss G-Man: J Edgar Hoover and the Making of the American Century by Beverly Gage.  G-Man has won the Pulitzer Prize for Biography and the American History Book Prize.  Hoover was a man admired by millions, but also a formidable public figure who intimidated his enemies, excluded minorities from his great American project and created the foundations of the US far right.  Beverly Gage is a professor of 20th century American history at Yale whose previous works include a history of terrorism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

'This is a monumental work about power, responsibility, and democracy itself. With deep research, an engaging voice, and penetrating insights, Beverly Gage has crafted a portrait of a man and a country in all its complexity and contradiction.'
—Jon Meacham, author of The Soul of America which we read in Book Club

The book is available in hardback for £29.12 / $47, paperback for £15.45 / $17 and Kindle for $15.

At 7:30pm we’ll discuss the book for 45 minutes, then discuss current events for 30 minutes, finishing at 8:45pm.  All are welcome, even if you haven’t read the book.  RSVP or contact [email protected] to receive the Zoom link, book discussion questions, and current events newsletter.
