GWC/LGBTQ+ Workshop
WORKSHOP: Talk About Sex and Gender Related Issues in the 2024 Campaign
Facilitators: Anne Hesse (Chair, GWC) and Bob Vallier (Chair, LGBTQ+)
The Republicans cannot win on matters that unite most Americans, and they know it, so instead they will continue their current plan of seeking to divide by focusing on so-called “culture war” issues. Two of these pertain to sexual and gender identity, namely, the ERA (or, more broadly, non-discrimination on the basis of sex) and LGBTQ+--but particularly T—rights. And while these may be “red meat” for the MAGA-right, they are also winning issues for us … if we are prepared to treat them properly. Treating them properly means NOT responding to the conversation in their terms BUT RATHER leading it on ours.
This workshop will share strategies for doing so, at two levels of conversation. First, for the “kitchen table talks” aimed at members and potential members of Democrats Abroad during the primary and pre-general election season. Second, for media appearances during which our republican opponents will likely seek to distract and distort from key issues of the election.
At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to :
- Identify potential problem areas related to discourse about sex and gender identity issues
- Analyze the rhetorical frames used by republicans in their talking points
- Describe new rhetorical frames to flip or pivot from republican talking points to our own
- Develop persuasive arguments that simultaneously neutralize republican arguments and advance our own.
- Connect issues of sex and gender identity to larger social and political issues central to the 2024 campaign.
