DA Lyon Book Club: Educated

After a long hiatus, Democrats Abroad Lyon's book club has picked a new book and will meet on Sunday, January 26 to talk about it.  Our selected book is Educated by Tara Westover.  It was first published in 2018 and was instantly a #1 NY Times bestseller.  It got numerous awards such as Book of the Year by the American Booksellers Association, Apple's Best Memoir of the Year, Amazon Editors' pick for the Best Book of 2018 and it was on Bill Gates and Barack Obama's best book lists for 2018.

Educated is the story of a girl's coming of age in rural Idaho under difficult circumstances, to say the least.  Westover's parents were fundamentalist Christian survivalists who refused all education, health and other services provided by the government.  Westover defied her family in order to go to college and eventually on to post-graduate work at Cambridge University.

The wonderful thing about coming to the Democrats Abroad book club meetings is the variety of points of view you get to hear.  Some of us are from Idaho and Idaho-adjacent states and have first hand-knowledge of the Westover family mentality.  Some of us have only ever flown over Idaho.  The Democrats Abroad book club is an ideal way to hear a spectrum of voices all reacting to the same slice of Americana.  It's by sharing our viewpoints that we will pick the right Democratic candidate and win in 2020!!
