Please join us for a peaceful vigil in memory of George Floyd and all victims of violent acts of racism and police brutality. We stand in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and those in the U.S. who have been risking their lives by taking to the streets to resist racism and discrimination in all its forms. As we witness the devastating effects of structural and institutional racism reach their breaking point around the world, we pledge to promote justice and safety for black people in every community, including ours here in Lyon.
Make your voice heard! Please fill out this form if you would like to speak during the vigil.
Please RSVP below to let us know if you plan to attend, as we need to prepare for this event in a way that respects social distancing guidelines and keeps everyone safe. Be sure to wear PPE (masks, gloves) where possible. If you are feeling sick, please DO NOT attend. Due to current laws and restrictions in place to prevent the transmission of Covid-19, we are limited to gathering 10 people at a single time, to be enforced by the police (Forces d'ordre). Therefore, we will ask all participants to please form a line while respecting social distancing guidelines (2 m) in order to lay flowers, light a candle, or speak at the foot of the Martin Luther King statue. We will livestream people as they pay their respects. We will then have to ask you to not remain clustered around the statue. There are cafes and restaurants in the area where you can congregate afterwards to share more thoughts and feelings.
If you are a person of color, you already know what institutionalized racism feels like. If not, the best way to be an ally is to show up. Listen to learn first, not to fix. NOW is the time to speak up and speak out, educate yourself and organize for a better tomorrow.
The vigil will be held at the bust of Martin Luther King, Jr. at Place Eugène Varlin which is at the intersection of rue de Créqui and rue de la Part Dieu in the 3rd arrondissement. Metro stop Line B is Place Guichard and Tram T1 stop is Palais de Justice – Mairie du 3ème.
