Borders and Globalization as a Political Challenge: Putting Today’s Walls and „America First“ Policies into Historical Perspective.

We are pleased to announce a presentation by Dr. Jan Logemann, one of our own chapter members. This will be an online event, taking place on Sunday, October 25 at 3:00 pm.

Jan Logemann teaches social and economic history at Göttingen University where he also directs the Erasmus masters program "Global Markets, Local Creativities". He studied in Berlin and State College, PA, and from 2010-2014 directed a research group at the German Historical Institute in Washington DC . In 2020 he was visiting professor for North-American history at Kassel University. His research focuses on transatlantic migration, consumption and economics. Jan Logemann has recently published: Engineered to Sell: European Émigrés and the Making of Consumer Capitalism (University of Chicago Press, 2019).

Dr. Logemann’s presentation is titled and can be summarized as follows:

Borders and Globalization as a Political Challenge: Putting Today’s Walls and „America First“ Policies into Historical Perspective.”

From building walls against immigration to raising tariffs against foreign trade, America’s borders have been a focal point of Donald Trump’s rhetoric and action as president. His strategy of shutting the United States off from the world in the face of globalization, however, has a long history in American politics. How are global transformations and the call for trade protectionism and cultural nativism connected historically? What answers can Democrats find today to the challenges of globalization, going beyond the populist rhetoric of building walls and economic nationalism championed by the White House over the past four years?”

We are looking forward to this immensely interesting presentation and getting a glimpse of our history from this standpoint. Remember, President Trump just condemned the classic book by Howard Zinn, “A People's History of the United States” as propaganda by the so-called radical left.
