KW Board Candidate Statements

Board Nominees-KW Chapter

Chair or Co-Chair

Adele Dobkowski

I have a deep interest in helping all DA members vote. In addition to acting as Vice Chair of the KW Chapter over the past year, I was Canada Project Lead for DA Canada’s Voter Assistance Initiative in 2020. Working with the KW chapter board has been highly rewarding. I’m eager to work with the incoming board to strengthen and expand our scope and provide more opportunities for our members to become engaged.

Timothy Flannery

I have been Chapter Chair of KW Democrats Abroad since its inception and involved for 19 years. Whether having primary elections at my office or attending events it is a pleasure meeting ex-Patriots and sharing ideas and experiences. Politics is the art of working together to bring about the best possible result for the most people. It is the attainable. To that end I repeat Ted Kennedy’s words. "For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."

Secretary

Diana Flannery

I have previously held the position of secretary and would also be happy to be a member at large. I have also participated In the Get Out the Vote campaign and other call initiatives to reach chapter members. I wish to ensure that democratic principles continue to move forward in a climate of political contention.

Treasurer

Chris Bonza

I have enjoyed being part of the KW DA Board for the past year, in the role of treasurer. I am happy to continue in this role. The past year was challenging and exciting as we worked hard to get out the vote. I’m pleased to be self-nominating in the hopes of contributing to the effort to sustain this blue wave into the midterms. Thanks for considering me as a nominee.

Membership Secretary

Peter Tesche

I have served as Membership Secretary on an interim basis for most of the past year. I've enjoyed the group of fellow board members and have a desire to continue in the role and, if appropriate, take on greater leadership responsibilities.

Member-at-Large: Events

Kathleen Sheehy

I have volunteered with DA for the past several years as a phone banker, chapter board member, and as part of the Voter Assistance Management Team that handled voter help requests from all over Canada in the 2020 general election.

Member-at-Large: Communications and Member Outreach

Douglas Drake

I have been a member of DA Canada for several years but have not been active. Last year, I decided that I had the responsibility to do more to end the Trump regime in Washington and move the US towards more progressive policies and actions. I participated with others in putting together a Voter Assistance Project that complimented the work done in mobilizing US citizens abroad to register and vote in the 2000 elections. My prior "lives" included working with the United Steelworkers Union on a number of campaigns--mobilizing union members to vote for Union friendly candidates, working and managing organizing campaigns and other situations where I worked to activate and mobilize members and others. I believe those skills and experiences would be helpful in working with members of our DA Canada chapter. If elected, I look forward to working with other Chapter leaders to build and grow our KW chapter.

Member-at-Large: University of Guelph DA Club

Kyle Novak

I am the current DA K-W Member-at-Large at the University of Guelph where I am a PhD candidate in Philosophy. My interest is in maintaining a DA presence at the university and in connecting with other Americans in higher-ed in Canada. Although the continued shutdowns in response to the pandemic have made it impossible to organize in-person campus events, I am hopeful that the coming years will see a rise in interest in DA in Guelph.

Member-at-Large

Mike Abernathy

Born in Ohio, I have been a Canadian Resident for over 15 years, but I will always consider myself an American. During these challenging times, facing difficulties unprecedented in our lifetimes, it is perhaps more important than ever to cling to the ideals of Liberty, Equality, and Democracy that our country was founded on. As we continue the Great Experiment into the 21st century, every single one of us, regardless of where we are around the globe, must stand united in support of these ideals and make our voices heard. I am honoured to be a part of this movement and will do my best to help further our goals for the betterment of all Americans.
