Dear Senator Manchin,
Dear Senator Sinema,
We, the leaders of Democrats Abroad, write to you with urgency on this Martin Luther King Jr. Day, imploring you to amend Senate rules in order to protect the voting rights of all Americans. Without the protection and expansion of voting rights, our democracy and our country are in serious jeopardy.
Voting is the cornerstone of democracy. It’s why we volunteer year-round, year in and year out, to ensure that millions of Americans abroad can cast their ballots and have a democratic voice in our government. We are mindful that our sacred right to vote is guaranteed on an equal basis in all 50 states and the District of Columbia thanks to federal law, demonstrating the positive impact federal voting rights legislation can and does have.
At a time when Republicans are slashing voting rights, suppressing communities of color, and taking every opportunity to destroy our institutions, it is imperative that the Democratic officials we worked so diligently to elect take every action within their power to safeguard every citizen’s right to vote.
We applaud President Biden and Vice President Harris for their leadership and continued commitment to protecting voting rights for all Americans, along with all other elected Democratic officials who are working so hard to help protect our democracy.
We are now calling upon you to do the same. We urge you to use your power to amend current Senate rules—rules which have been abused by the Republican Party for years to stifle progress the overwhelming majority of Americans support and desperately need.
As Martin Luther King Jr. wrote during the peak of the Civil Rights Movement, "[t]he ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy." In this challenging and controversial moment, we urge you to stand on the right side of history: Amend the Senate rules immediately and protect our voting rights!
