June 14th is Flag Day. What does the flag mean to you? Let's explore the nuances of the symbol through the lens of the 1619 Project, an initiative that aims to reframe the history of the United States by placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of black Americans at the very center of our narrative. In the first episode, The Fight for a True Democracy, Nikole Hannah-Jones expresses her chagrin when her father hoisted high the red, white and blue in front of their home. She never understood why he would do such a thing in the face of the racial discrimination black peoples experienced in America. Hannah-Jones examines her feelings and ultimately comes to understand the significance behind her father's acts.
