Frequently Asked Questions
What is happening?
The Queensland local chapter is the regional branch of Democrats Abroad Australia, the official country committee for United States Democrats living in Australia. The Queensland Chapter is mobilising in advance of the 2024 Presidential Election. As part of enabling the local chapter to be as successful as possible during this vital election cycle, it is necessary to hold an Annual General Meeting to elect officers and formalise chapter goals for the remainder of the year.
Why is this happening?
Since early 2024, the chapter has been run by an appointed coordinator and all elected offices have been vacant. In order to maximize the effectiveness of the chapter, officer positions should be filled prior to August 31, 2024 in-line with the Democrats Abroad Australia by-laws.
When is this happening?
Members of the Queensland chapter typically meet monthly on an informal basis at a local restaurant/pub in the Brisbane CBD. The next regular scheduled meet-up is on August 7, 2024 at 5:30pm. In lieu of the informal monthly meet-up, we will hold the Annual General Meeting. For QLD chapter members that do not live in SEQ or cannot attend in-person, electronic voting for chapter officers will available.
If you plan on voting either in-person or electronically, please complete the RSVP form located at the bottom of this page.
Important: In order to elect chapter officers, the Democrats Abroad Australia bylaws require a minimum of 15 voters from the chapter to participate in the election.
Am I eligible to vote in the chapter election?
Any member of Democrats Abroad Australia that resides in Queensland is eligible to vote in the chapter election at the Annual General Meeting. A member is defined as:
Members must be citizens of the United States, of voting age, which for the purposes of these By Laws shall mean having attained the age of 18 by the first Tuesday following the first Monday of the first November to follow the date of the member joining, who subscribe to the principles of the Democratic Party of the United States and of DPCA and are resident in Australia.
How can I run for a Democrats Abroad Queensland chapter office?
If you would like to run for an open chapter office, please contact Jasper Lee, Chairperson, Democrats Abroad Australia by emailing [email protected] no later than July 13, 2024. Please indicate the office you are seeking and (optionally) provide a candidate statement.
