Who We Are

Democrats Abroad is the official Democratic Party arm for the millions of Americans living outside the United States. We strive to provide Americans abroad a Democratic voice in our government and elect Democratic candidates by mobilizing the overseas vote.

Democrats Abroad has 44 country committees throughout Europe, the Americas, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. These country committees keep Americans abroad informed of their rights and help them participate in the U.S. political process. Our members live in more than 190 countries around the globe and vote in every state and Congressional district in the U.S.

Democrats Abroad is recognized as a "state" party by the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and is represented on the DNC by eight voting members, as well as at the quadrennial Democratic National Convention.

Our online voter registration tool - votefromabroad.org - makes it easy to request a ballot and vote absentee from any place on the planet.

Statement on the Passing of John Lewis

Statement from Julia Bryan, Chair of Democrats Abroad Our hearts are heavy with sorrow today. John Lewis inspired so many of us in Democrats Abroad through his actions, his words and his welcome. We hold tight to his reminders about the importance of getting up to a little good trouble, and above all remembering that the "right to vote is precious and almost sacred, and one of the most important blessings of our democracy." We will carry that reminder with us for the rest of our lives, working to share it as far and wide as we can. Thank you so much for your courage, and for your life long fight for the cause of justice. Rest in peace, rest in power.

    DA Speaks with Samantha Power

This week, members of Democrats Abroad located around the world were joined in a zoom call by former UN Ambassador Samantha Power to discuss the 2020 election. This call with a high-profile former Obama administration official represents an increasing recognition of the importance in American elections of Democrats living outside the United States. Recent events, said the Ambassador, particularly President Trump’s efforts to delegitimize absentee voting, “underscore the urgency...of the efforts you all are making to organize and take nothing for granted.”  Though the conversation covered a number of important elements of American politics and the upcoming election, the Ambassador focused in particular on the damage done by the Trump administration to international stability and America’s standing in the world: “The underlying damage, which really affects the US’s ability to get what it wants within the international system is the attack on the kind of countries in which many of you are living, it’s the attack on alliances… it’s the absence of constancy, the absence of faithfulness. You could disagree vehemently with George Bush, but weren’t worried that the Bush administration, for the sake of showing their difference from a prior administration, were going to almost nihilistically rip up everything.” For Democrats Abroad, the presence of Ambassador Power on the call demonstrates the increasing understanding among Democratic officials of the voter impact and unique set of issues confronting Democrats living outside the United States.  “We're delighted to have had the chance to speak with Ambassador Power,” said Julia Bryan, Chair of Democrats Abroad, "both for her clear insight into where the U.S. stands on worldwide issues that impact our members and for what her presence represents in terms of the growing acknowledgment of the millions of American voters who live outside the country.”

Geneva Focuses On: Swing State North Carolina

The 2020 election is important in all states and at all levels of government, but we know that the Presidential election will hinge on a few swing states. Join us online or in person in Geneva for an informational evening about the electoral landscape in swing state North Carolina.

As a vital swing state in 2020, these NC Democratic victories are key to success:

    1. Elect Joe Biden president
    2. Elect Cal Cunningham to Thom Tillis's Senate seat to take back the Senate
    3. Keep Democratic control of the US House
    4. Re-elect Democratic Governor Roy Cooper
    5. Turn both State House chambers Democratic

What is the state of these races? What is the mood and trend among North Carolinian voters? Who are the activist groups pushing Democratic victory on the ground there? Hear main speaker and long-time DA Geneva member Eric Berman, working on the ground in Charlotte, NC, since March. Eric will share his experiences, address questions, and describe key NC campaigns and activist groups. His presentation will be preceded by DA Global Chair Julia Bryan (an NC voter) and followed by Democratic candidate for NC State Treasurer Ronnie Chatterji. This promises to be a fun and stimulating evening and is a fundraiser for DA Switzerland’s voter outreach projects.

    Schedule:

    Democratic Yoga with Gretchen

    This is a recurring event.

Yoga is so popular today for its many benefits it offers the mind, body and soul. But maybe you've never tried yoga. Or maybe you've tried and thought it wasn't for you? Yoga is for everyone, and this Radiant Warrior vinyasa flow set is perfect for you. If you are already a confirmed yogi, come along for a slow flow that gets back to the basics.

If you have the following, please bring it to class: a yoga mat or some kind of mat that doesn't slip, a couple of yoga blocks or thick books (Harry Potter style), a strap or fabric belt or scarf, a small pillow or cushion or towel, and some water to drink.

Gretchen has done yoga for many years and has completed the 200 hour Yoga Alliance Teacher Training Certification with Yoga Farm Ithaca. She is chair of Democrats Abroad Grenoble, national Volunteer Coordinator, and teaches English at the Université Savoie Mont Blanc in Chambéry. She votes in Maine.

This event is A Feelgood Fundraiser for Democrats Abroad France, and benefits our critical 2020 "Get Out the Vote" Efforts this Fall. Any contribution is welcome; 10 EUR per person is suggested. Please give here. Thank you!
