About the Speaker:
Tafeni L. English is the Outreach Director at the Southern Poverty Law Center, where she travels across the U.S. to counter hate and extremism. In her capacity, she also oversees the Civil Rights Memorial Center, an interpretive center designed to provide visitors to the Civil Rights Memorial Center with a deeper understanding of the civil rights movement.
The Southern Poverty Law Center is dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry and to seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of our society. Using litigation, education, and other forms of advocacy, the SPLC works toward the day when the ideals of equal justice and equal opportunity will be a reality.
Tafeni has 20 years of experience advocating for social justice issues. She began her career in 1997 when she joined Southern Poverty Law Center as a research analyst in the Intelligence Project, combating hate and extremism. Later she would transfer to the Teaching Tolerance department as the first director of Mix It Up. From 2004-2008, she served as our community outreach coordinator. In addition to her work with Southern Poverty Law Center, Tafeni has devoted over ten years combating housing discrimination and is heavily involved in community activism and organizing.
She has presented nationally for colleges & universities and K-12 schools, community groups, human rights organizations, colleges & universities, law enforcement, juvenile probation officers and military installations.
She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing and a master’s degree in Counseling & Psychology from Troy State University, Troy Alabama. Tafeni was born and raised in Lincoln, Alabama. For over 20 years, she has called Montgomery Alabama home.
