Join us for a powerful exploration of a lesser-known chapter in history: the routes of the Underground Railroad that stretched from Texas into Mexico.

Our confirmed speaker, Dr. Maria Esther Hammack of Ohio University, will share her groundbreaking research on how freedom seekers found liberation beyond the southern U.S. border. Dr. María Esther Hammack is a historian, author, and public intellectual whose work reframes the Underground Railroad through a transnational lens. Born in Mexico, she is Assistant Professor of African American History at The Ohio State University. Her research uncovers the journeys of enslaved and self-emancipated people who sought freedom by traveling south into Mexico, highlighting the vital role of women and cross-border networks. Her forthcoming book, Channels of Liberation: Freedom Fighters in the Age of Abolition, expands the narrative of Black resistance across the Americas. She is also a McNeil Center Postdoctoral Fellowship awardee.

This 90-minute webinar will highlight the cross-cultural connections, resistance, and resilience of those who traveled south to freedom.
