Breaking Ground: Discussion of PBS Documentary “Asian Americans”

Join us for the first of a series of discussions about the PBS documentary “Asian Americans”. Attendees should watch the first episode prior to the discussion (details on where to view it are below). During the event, we will share clips from the episode and discuss thoughts and ideas we had while watching.

As described on the official website: Asian Americans is a five-hour film series that delivers a bold, fresh perspective on a history that matters today, more than ever. As America becomes more diverse, and more divided, while facing unimaginable challenges, how do we move forward together? Told through intimate and personal lives, the series will cast a new lens on U.S. history and the ongoing role that Asian Americans have played in shaping the nation’s story.

In the first episode, focus is placed on the arrival of immigrants from Asia and what challenges they faced in the U.S.: In an era of exclusion and U.S. empire, new immigrants arrive from China, India, Japan, the Philippines and beyond. Barred by anti-Asian laws they become America’s first “undocumented immigrants,” yet they build railroads, dazzle on the silver screen, and take their fight for equality to the U.S. Supreme Court.

We hope you will be able to join us for this discussion - all are welcome. This is the first of a series of events, so check back for future dates when we discuss the other episodes.
