Virtual Learning Session #2: East Africa’s Role in the Cold War
In our second virtual session, we explore how the Cold War played out in East Africa from independence through the 1990s, and what these developments meant for the region as a whole. Panelists will share reflections on the ways capitalism and socialism unfurled in the region, and how proxy forces operated in the post-colonial space.
Participants will gain insights into:
How local policy intersected with African independence movements and Cold War rivalries
The legacies of proxy conflicts in shaping democracy and governance
Lessons Americans can draw from the Cold War history of the region
By focusing on discussion, reflection, and audience dialogue, we hope to spark a thoughtful conversation about democracy, self-determination, and what this history can teach us in the present moment. We will start with brief introductions by panelists, followed by a moderated discussion, then Q&A townhall style from the audience, and a small group reflection.
