Virtual Learning Session 4 - The Legacy of AIDS Policies
Virtual Learning Session #4
Public Health, Policy, and Compassion: The Legacy of PEPFAR and Kibaki’s AIDS Response
During President Mwai Kibaki’s tenure, Kenya faced one of the gravest health crises in its history — the HIV/AIDS epidemic. In a time marked by stigma and silence, his administration expanded access to treatment, invested in public education (including the President himself being pictured on HIV Testing posters -- unheard of at the time!), and reframed HIV as a national health issue rather than a moral one.
Two decades later, as the United States retreats from its own historic commitments to HIV/AIDS funding and prevention, this conversation asks: what can Americans learn from Kibaki’s example of compassion, pragmatism, and political courage?
Join Democrats Abroad Kenya for a reflective discussion on the legacy of Kenya’s AIDS policies, how communities overcame fear and shame to build care and resilience, and what lessons this history offers for sustaining progress and protecting rights today.
Date: January 29th, 6pm-7:30pm Kenya Time (10am - 11:30am EST / New York time)
Format: Virtual discussion and reflection
