Transgender identity politics challenge the popular understanding of the relationship between gender and sexuality. The GOP likely will remain committed to transphobia for ideological reasons. More remarkably, leading centrist Democrats, including some in the White House, don’t realize that trans rights are a winning issue. Their squeamishness stands in contrast to the stance of grassroots Democrats in purple and red states such as North Carolina, Kentucky, and Nebraska where local Democrats have held the line against transphobia—sometimes with remarkable political success. For them and for us Trans Rights Are Everyone’s Rights!
