DA Denmark Book Club Discussion of On Earth We Are Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong

WE REGRET THAT TONIGHT'S DISCUSSION HAS BEEN CANCELLED AND WILL BE RESCHEDULED FOR A FUTURE DATE.

This month the DA Denmark Book Club will meet online on Tuesday, January 18 from 6:30pm to 8:30 pm to discuss Vietnamese American poet Ocean Vuong's debut novel, On Earth We Are Briefly Gorgeous. It is written as a long letter by a young Vietnamese American to his mother and mirrors Vuong's own life.

From Goodreads: "On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous is a letter from a son to a mother who cannot read. Written when the speaker, Little Dog, is in his late twenties, the letter unearths a family's history that began before he was born — a history whose epicenter is rooted in Vietnam — and serves as a doorway into parts of his life his mother has never known, all of it leading to an unforgettable revelation. At once a witness to the fraught yet undeniable love between a single mother and her son, it is also a brutally honest exploration of race, class, and masculinity. Asking questions central to our American moment, immersed as we are in addiction, violence, and trauma, but undergirded by compassion and tenderness, On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous is as much about the power of telling one's own story as it is about the obliterating silence of not being heard. Written when the speaker, Little Dog, is in his late twenties, the letter unearths a family's history that began before he was born — a history whose epicenter is rooted in Vietnam — and serves as a doorway into parts of his life his mother has never known, all of it leading to an unforgettable revelation. Our next book will be Empire of Pain: The Secret History of the Sackler Family by Patrick Radden Keefe. A book about the opioid crisis and the family who has profited from it, it's a lot to take in and so we will read it in two parts for discussion in February and March.
