DA Denmark Book Club Discussion of The Deepest South of All: True Stories from Natchez, Mississippi by Richard Grant: Online
This month the DA Denmark Book Club will meet ONLINE on Tuesday, June 21 from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm to discuss
The Deepest South of All: True Stories from Natchez, Mississippi. Best selling British travel journalist Richard Grant weaves together two stories Natchez, Mississippi: the modern story of a small Southern town whose once extreme wealth was built on slavery and cotton trying to come to terms with the entirety of its past and the historical story of West African prince Abd al Rahman Ibrahima who was enslaved near Natchez for 40 years before finally gaining his freedom. Filled with wild stories, eccentric characters, and a deep, heavy history, the Natchez of Grant's book could be a stand-in for the US as a whole and, perhaps, a guidepost for a way forward.
DA Denmark chair, Chesney McKinley Severance, was born in Natchez and spent her summers there growing up. A regular of the book club, she will be joining this discussion with her own observations about both the book and her experiences there. This book is the first in a DA Denmark series that tells the stories of the hometowns of our members. Is there a book about your part of the US you think we should read? Let us know at [email protected].
You can order your copy of The Deepest South of All from Books and Company (Sofievej 1, 2900 Hellerup). Delivery typically takes 2-3 days. Pick up at the store.
We'll be taking a break over July but will pick back up on August 16 with a very special reading and discussion of Maus by Art Spigelman. We hope that you will read this book with your age-appropriate children over the summer and join our conversation about the story itself and the censorship happening right now in schools across the US.
