DA France Speaker Series: US Trade Policy in Turbulent TimesRSVP
FIRST TUESDAY SPEAKER SERIES
US TRADE POLICY IN TURBULENT TIMES:
AN OLD CONSENSUS COLLAPSES, A NEW PATH IN DISPUTE
Please join us for a discussion with an expert on US trade policy, its impact on US workers and households and the possible ways forward after the 2016 Trump campaign broke the existing consensus on trade. Sandra Polaski will discuss the winners and losers from trade in the US, the weaponization of trade policy in 2016 and the various experiments now underway to find a new consensus, including the USMCA (“NAFTA 2.0”). She will discuss the impact of the USMCA’s unprecedented labor protections on Mexican workers during the first three years of the agreement.
ABOUT OUR SPEAKER:
SANDRA POLASKI is an expert and former policy maker on trade and its impacts on employment and inequality. She is currently a senior research scholar at Boston University’s Global Economic Governance Initiative and a member of the congressionally-appointed Independent Mexico Labor Expert Board. She was formerly the Deputy Director-General for Policy at the International Labor Organization and before that the head of the International Labor Affairs Bureau during the first Obama administration. She started her working life as an union organizer and negotiator, the beginning of a lifelong commitment to seeking social justice.
FIRST TUESDAY SPEAKER SERIES:
The First Tuesday Speaker Series is back! Every first Tuesday of the month, we will host a speaker’s event with one or two experts on issues that concern us as Democrats. We will hear from the invited speaker briefly and then have the opportunity to exchange with them. The events will take place in a Paris restaurant over an apéro: we’ll have drinks during the session, and then after the event anyone who likes may stay for dinner as well, to continue the convivial evening. All drinks and food will be paid directly to the restaurant by each participant.
