Take Back the Court! Chelsey Davidson speaks with ProDAG

We've heard so much in recent weeks about the threat the Supreme Court poses to reproductive rights, gun violence prevention laws, climate change, the separation of church and state, and other fundamental human rights and democratic principles. How did we get here, and how much do you really know about the Court as an institution? Join DA Germany’s Progressive Caucus on July 11 at 1:00 p.m. EST / 7:00 p.m. CEST for a conversation with Chelsey Davidson from the Take Back the Court Foundation to learn more. The discussion will range from a general overview of the court's history, the court expansion movement, and insight into the recent end-of-term decisions. This will be a great opportunity for us to learn as a community and explore what action we can take to defend our democratic rights.

Düss-Ruhr Chapter Book Club: Traveling Black

This month, we will be reading 'Traveling Black' by Mia Bay
"In “Traveling Black,” Mia Bay’s superb history of mobility and resistance, the question of literal movement becomes a way to understand the civil rights movement writ large. “Most studies of segregation are centered largely on the South, and are more grounded in the history of particular communities than in the experiences of Black people in motion,” Bay writes. “Once one of the most resented forms of segregation, travel segregation is now one of the most forgotten.”"

DÜSS-RUHR CHAPTER BOOK CLUB: Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead

This month, we will be reading 'Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead' by Olga Tokarczuk.
"This marvelously weird and fablelike mystery, originally published in Poland a decade ago and now translated into English by Antonia Lloyd-Jones, opens in the dead of winter on a remote Polish plateau so close to the Czech Republic the phone signal crosses it “with no regard for the national borders.” Emergency operators pick up in the wrong country, which is a problem for the novel’s cantankerous narrator, Janina Duszejko, the caretaker for the seven summer homes that dot the plateau. Locals see her as “an old woman, gone off her rocker living in this wilderness. Useless and unimportant.” She spends her days poring over the poetry of William Blake and “The Complete Ephemerides, 1920-2020.” Her socialization is limited, her empathy reserved for inanimate objects (a refurbished house “looked as if it wanted to be left in peace to carry on decomposing”) and animals, which “show the truth about a country.”"
All readers are welcome. RSVP to receive the meeting information - depending on the current COVID situation, we will either meet on Zoom or in person.

DÜSS-RUHR CHAPTER BOOK CLUB: The Lincoln Highway

This month, we will be reading 'The Lincoln Highway' by Amor Towles.
"The Lincoln Highway is a joyride. Amor Towles' new Great American Road Novel tails four boys — three 18-year-olds who met in a juvenile reformatory, plus a brainy 8-year-old — as they set out from Nebraska in June, 1954, in an old Studebaker in pursuit of a better future. If this book were set today, their constant detours and U-turns would send GPS into paroxysms of navigational recalculations. But hitch onto this delightful tour de force and you'll be pulled straight through to the end, helpless against the inventive exuberance of Towles' storytelling."
All readers are welcome. RSVP to receive the meeting information - depending on the current COVID situation, we will either meet on Zoom or in person.

DÜSS-RUHR CHAPTER BOOK CLUB: Hades, Argentina

This month, we will be reading 'Hades, Argentina' by Daniel Loedel.
"Even those with a sense of its history might best recall Argentina as the setting for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Evita. Unlike Webber’s Eva Perón, Thomas Shore, the protagonist of Daniel Loedel’s marvel of a literary debut, Hades, Argentina, has left the country at a moment of personal and political upheaval, shedding his identity and fleeing to the safety of New York. The fates of those who remain behind–the disappeared–fuel this elegant, courageous novel."
All readers are welcome. RSVP to receive the meeting information - depending on the current COVID situation, we will either meet on Zoom or in person.
