The Divided States of America - a presentation by Arthur Landwehr, former ARD correspondent to Washington
Arthur Landwehr was the German correspondent to Washington for the ARD (the primary German public broadcaster) from 1999 to 2006 and again from 2018 to 2022. During his time in the US, he observed four Presidencies first-hand, Clinton, Bush, Trump and Biden, and experienced American society both pre- and post-Obama.
His book, „The Torn States of America. Old Myths and new values - a country struggling for identity“ (a literal translation) examines the moods and expectations of US voters at the start of the primaries. He describes the election campaign as a culture war that threatens to tear America apart. The core issues examined are: the fear of decline among whites and the increasing self-confidence of blacks and hispanics, the cowboy myth and the influence of woke intellectuals (cancel culture), as well as exclusionary tribal behavior and "America first" along with the geographical divide of middle America versus the liberal coastal states.
As a German journalist with an intimate knowledge on the United States, Mr. Landwehr provides a unique perspective on the American situation and the problems it poses.
