Update on Immigrant Detention
Immigration detention is the detention of people who are awaiting deportation and those suspected of visa violations, illegal entry, or other civil violations. The American immigration detention system is the largest in the world and has grown twenty-fold since 1979 and by 75% in the first decade of the 21st century. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) each use immigration detention facilities, while unaccompanied children are taken care of by the Office of Refugee Resettlement [1].

Emily Lines published Germany Membership Development Coordinator in Volunteer 2021-11-28 12:28:04 -0500
Germany Membership Development Coordinator
An integral aspect to the success of Democrats Abroad is its members. Democrats Abroad Germany is looking for a volunteer to become its Membership Development Coordinator to help DAG maintain and grow its membership.
The Membership Development Coordinator should focus on helping DAG learn more about its members. This includes learning about both active members and silent members, i.e., members that are interested in DA, but not actively participating. DAG wants to learn about how to handle ideological differences within the organization, and create local events that bring people together to discuss issues (ex. Socrates cafe). Many individuals join DA to find a community to discuss politics with and sometimes opportunities to do so are not readily available. Therefore, DAG would like to establish more chances for these discussions in the hopes of creating a more cohesive group (e.g. kitchen table talks).
As part of this role, the coordinator will be responsible for:
- Making contact with new members
- Following up with new members who indicate that they want to volunteer
- Finding ways and areas in which members can volunteer
- Developing new leaders
- Providing training for chapters to engage and develop members and volunteers
- Creating a membership survey that asks members about what types of events and volunteer opportunities they are interested in, how they feel they can best contribute to DAG’s efforts, what motivates them to be actively involved, and why they have not gotten involved sooner
- Attend monthly meetings of the DAG Executive Committee
Time Commitment: 5-10 hours/week
Interested or have questions? Contact Kenton Barnes, DAG Chair, [email protected]

Göttingen-Hannover Postcarding Volunteers / Coordinator
One of the great and fun ways for reaching our members in a get-out-to-vote effort is to work on Democrats Abroad’s new postcarding campaign. The theme for this effort is called “Together We Can Defend Democracy” and we need volunteers and /or a coordinator to help us prepare for the 2022 midterm elections.
The action started this Fall and Democrats Abroad Germany has been stockpiling these cards for a large mailing to go out early in 2022. It’s a fun activity for the evenings when your just laying back to enjoy a movie or good music. All you need are colored pencils or felt tip pens.
If your interested in helping or being a coordinator, you can contact: Christian J. Gross, [email protected]

Precinct Captains for Kassel and Magdeburg
The Göttingen-Hannover Chapter is looking for two persons interested in becoming the Precinct Captain in the Kassel and Magdeburg area. In Magdeburg we would like to create a new precinct to help Americans living in the area build a DA community. The precinct captain is a local organizer who:
- helps U.S. voters mobilize for coming elections by setting up information stands and voter registration events
- builds a community where monthly or quarterly meetings and events can be organized
- organize events around the American holidays like the 4th of July, Thanksgiving, etc.
- build relationships with existing members and work to attract new members
- Your job is to bring a local face to Democrats Abroad
As the Precinct Captain you will not be alone, but you will work together with the Chapter Chair and chapter leaders and participate in the monthly DAG Executive Committee meetings. This is your chance to get involved and help us mobilize as many Americans as we can for the coming midterm elections in 2022 and be a part of a great community of DA volunteers.

Understanding the AAPI Vote: Exploring Voter Data with Christine Chen from APIAVote
According to the 2020 U.S. Census, the Asian population is the fastest-growing racial and ethnic group in the U.S.
The impact of this large group was evident following the 2020 November election with much analysis pointing to the strategic and important role played by Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) voters. During the Georgia run-off election, both the Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff campaigns had organizers focused specifically on the AAPI vote in Georgia. Looking ahead to the 2022 midterms, it will continue to be critical to get AAPI voters to turn-out. But what do we know about this voting group? What challenges do we face and how do we help get out the vote among the AAPI community in 2022?

Stuttgart Postcarding Volunteers
We are currently looking for volunteers to work on Democrats Abroad’s new postcarding campaign with the theme "Together We Can Defend Democracy."
We will start stockpiling postcards for a big early 2022 mailing to all DA Germany members to motivate them to register early and be ready to be the margin of victory in the 2022 midterm elections.
There's some simple, fun stuff to color on both sides of our new postcard that would work with a variety of color combinations, stripes, stars, or patterns. There are three short, exact phrases to write. If you can put a 60 cent stamp on your postcards or make a contribution for postage that would be terrific, but isn't necessary if it's not possible.

- LGBTQ+ Caucus
- Hispanic Caucus
- Progressive Caucus
- Veterans and Military Families Caucus

For more information on the individual caucuses, you can click here.

Even though we live abroad, it's important that U.S. citizens make sure to use their right to vote and I enjoy helping make sure that more U.S. citizens know about this right and use it.
