  • DA Speaker Series: Nina Turner on race relations in the U.S.

Join Democrats Abroad on February 21st from 1pm to 2pm DC time as we speak with Our Revolution President, Senator Nina Turner, in a Black History Month webinar and Q&A.

Since the 2016 Presidential elections there has been an increasing culture of divisive rhetoric throughout the country. During the webinar we will discuss the state of race relations in the U.S. with Turner. She will outline her thoughts on a way forward and the belief that the Democratic Party - and all Americans - must condemn all forms of racism and reject division as we move towards the 2020 elections and beyond.

    Bio
Nina Turner is the president of Our Revolution, which was founded in August 2016 to perpetuate and organize the political coalition that formed during Senator Bernie Sanders' 2016 presidential campaign. Previously, she served in the Ohio State Senate, where she advocated for progressive causes such as education and healthcare reform, and was the Democratic nominee for Ohio Secretary of State and a strategic leader of the Ohio Democratic Party. Politico included her in their Playbook Power List of 18 people to watch in 2018. Outside of the political arena, Turner has decades of experience as a college professor and motivational speaker.
You can send questions for Nina until Feb 20th, 12 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) to webinars@democratsabroad.org. Please include your name, country, and voting state.

    Chair’s Report on 2018 Activities

Democrats Abroad (DA) Philippines (DAPh) Chair Lisa Pagkalinawan reports on activities held in 2018. Photo by DAPh member Joan Corpuz.

    2018 Events

On September 8, 2018, we held a voter registration open house in which we helped four people register to vote.

On October 4, 2018, DAPh members were invited to a lunch-time talk and dinner featuring former Democratic senator from Virginia Jim Webb. A Vietnam War veteran, Webb was Navy secretary in the Reagan administration, and he ran and won his Senate seat in 2008 as a moderate Democrat. He was Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs, Counsel for the US House Committee on Veterans' Affairs, and a Marine Corps officer. In the private sector, he has been an Emmy Award winning journalist, a filmmaker and the author of ten books. In addition, he taught literature at the US Naval Academy and was a Fellow at the Harvard Institute of Politics. The lunch talk was held during the Rotary Club of Manila’s monthly meeting at the New World Hotel and the dinner was a casual event at the Elks Club. During the lunch event, DAPh member Elian Habayeb asked a question during the open forum. And during the dinner, DAPh Chair Lisa talked with Jim about three issues DA is advocating:

    1. Residency-based taxation
    2. Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) reform
    3. Medicare portability.

On October 6, 2018, we held a voters’ open house in Ortigas where we helped two people with registering and answering questions about voting. By phone and email, we received inquiries and assisted some five people.

On November 7, 2018, we had an election watch event at Union Jack Tavern in the morning and an evening reception at Farfalla Ristorante Italiano.

On Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 2018, we visited American detainees at the Bicutan Immigration Detention Facility in Bicutan and brought them food, reading materials and other necessities. We did not participate in Memorial Day or Veterans Day events in 2018. But we have continued to provide support for a few incarcerated Americans, with DAPh former Chair John Boyd and DAPh member Dave Kuchenbecker making regular visits with logistical support from DAPh Chair Lisa. DAPh member Dave has made efforts to compile a list of detainees and offer assistance.

DAPh member and entertainment event planning company owner Tyrone Norwood and DAPh Chair Lisa want to put together a fundraiser mixer to give expats a chance to have some hometown fun.

2018 Phone Banking and Text Blasts

DAPh member Dean Shuey continued his exceptional efforts in Getting Out the Vote (GOTV) by calling Americans worldwide to encourage them to vote in important elections. Well done DAPh member Dean for being DA's number two GOTV caller!

DA sent out two text blasts to DAPh members before the election to offer support with registering and submitting their ballots. DAPh Chair Lisa received only two replies to the first text and some 20 replies to the second. She assisted several of the some 20 people by phone and email to request and return their ballots.

    2018 Membership

At the end of 2018, we had 930 members. However, only 596 or 62% are considered valid. To be considered "valid," members must meet the following conditions:

    1. Be approved as a member
    2. Have a local street address and/or local phone number
    3. Be verified as still living in the Philippines within the past four years.

    2018 Social Media

On October 7, 2018, DAPh Vice-Chair Angelo Goode posted a short article with instructions on how to vote from abroad in the Philippines on DAPh's Facebook  and Twitter accounts and his LinkedIn. The posts directed readers to DemocratsAbroad.org and VoteFromAbroad.org as DAPh member Dean recommended in order to increase traffic to the DA websites and give Americans the option of becoming DA members.

Like DA France, DA Canada and others, DAPh participated in the social media campaign to encourage overseas Americans to vote by re-posting announcements with overseas voting information per state such as registration, vote and return ballot deadlines, as well as reminders to follow up and confirm overseas votes were received and counted.

    DAPh Vice-Chair Angelo also re-posted:

    1. News articles highlighting reasons why Americans should vote Democrat from CNN, The New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, Time, USA Today, BBC, Guardian, Reuters and Associated Press for instance
    2. Graphics on: ratify the Equal Rights Amendment; racism, xenophobia, anti-Semitism and Islamophobia; health care; immigration; LGBT* rights; voter turnout; climate change; women's rights; Republican policies that caused the 2018 deficit such as Trump and Bush tax cuts, wars and base defense increases; the importance of Secretaries of State elections; and voter suppression; among others
    3. Videos explaining how easy it is to vote and why Americans should vote, and on the issue of guns
    4. The DA I Voted from Abroad meme in support of the meme going viral, and a couple of DA surveys on voting experience and GOTV Phone Banking.

DAPh former Treasurer Irene Sobrevinas posted on Facebook news articles, graphics, videos and other information on diversity, why I am a Democrat, anti-Trump sentiments, cooperative economics and US-Philippine relations and affairs for example.

DAPh member Joan updated the DAPh address on our Facebook page.

On Facebook, at the end of 2018, 255 people liked our page, of which 51% are women and 48% are men. And our Facebook  followers come from 27 countries.

DAPh also gained a new member through Facebook, DAPh member Nancy Longatan. And on Facebook, DAPh former Treasurer Irene and DAPh Vice-Chair Angelo clarified DAPh's role toward the voting process for someone who had questions.

On Twitter, DAPh Twitter Account #1 @DemsAbroadPhils (unofficial DAPh Twitter account) has 143 Twitter followers and DAPh Twitter Account #2 @DemsAbroadPH (official DAPh Twitter account) has 20 Twitter followers. And on DAPh's official Twitter account (Account #2), DAPh Vice-Chair Angelo recommended to an Oregon voter that Oregonians in the Philippines get a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to fully access their state website voting functions.

  • From APATHY to ACTIVISM: DA Italy Annual General Meeting

So what are YOU doing about it?

    Get Out and Vote
(Speech recorded in 1964 by Mario Savio, Leader of the Free Speech Movement at The University of California, Berkeley)

Come to the Democrats Abroad Italy Annual General Meeting

    May 26th-27th in Milan Italy

    From APATHY to ACTIVISM:

    • Have you done everything in your power to make a positive change for the future of America?
    • Have you told every American that you know or meet abroad that they can and should vote from abroad?
    • Have you organized locally to strategize on how you can maximize your power as a single voter from abroad?

The point is that no matter how you answered the questions above, we want YOU to come to Democrats Abroad Italy’s Annual General Meeting. We need to ORGANIZE ORGANIZE ORGANIZE to get Democrats and Progressives elected in 2018 and there's no more effective way to do that than at an in-person meeting.

Why coming to the Democrats Abroad Italy Annual General Meeting (AGM) is the best thing that you can do this year:

    • The AGM will be the largest and most impactful gathering of American POLITICAL ACTIVISTS in Italy, PERIOD. You’ll meet other Americans who want to organize WITH YOU and make a meaningful impact in November through presentations, speeches and workshops
    • A leader within the Democratic National Committee in D.C. will attend and speak at our AGM, sharing insights on outreach and strategies to help Get Out the Vote (A Fundraising Gala for donors and sponsors will be held with our DNC guest for the Evening of May 26th as well).
    • Only 400,000 Americans abroad voted in 2016 out of nearly 6.9 million eligible Americans abroad. We can do better and YOU can be part of the solution.
    • Voter Apathy is NOT about how you feel on the issues, it's about what you do to influence them and the AGM is the place to get tangible strategies you can implement immediately!

    The important stuff:

    Who: Democrats Abroad Italy
    What: Annual General Meeting
    When: May 26-27, 2018
Where: 4-Star Conference Hotel in Downtown Milan, Italy (Specific Location TBA)
Why: Because you’re not apathetic and you want to make a difference!
    Cost: Requested donation amount TBD*
*while we legally cannot charge for attendance, we will suggest a recommended donation amount upon registration to help cover venue and organizational costs. Payment links will be setup to facilitate your much needed donations.
Members of Democrats Abroad from every region in Italy and EMEA are welcome to join us. Email daitaly-chair@democratsabroad.org to receive more information as it becomes available. Official Registration and program details will be available in the next few days but we encourage you to mark your calendar and make travel plans now. MORE DETAILS TO COME!
IMPORTANT: If you'd like to volunteer to help organize the AGM, we need all hands on deck! We will need help with Event Greeters, Voter Registration, Event Setup, Merchandise, Social Media Support, Photography and Videography, Audio Visual Tech Support and a plethora of other things. Send an email to daitaly-chair@democratsabroad.org with the Subject Line: "AGM Volunteer".

    AGM Notes: Executive Committee Meeting

DemsAbroadGermany_AGM-2018_5389_lo-res_1_.jpgThe AGM in Hamburg concluded with an ExComm meeting Sunday morning, which could have gone longer than the planned 6 hours. Best practices regarding the DA website, membership database and the DA Wiki were discussed, and members had the opportunity to share valuable information for the current election year. Katie Solon talked about phone banking, the single most effective way of getting Americans living outside of the US to vote.  (If you are interested in helping, you can find more information here: www.democratsabroad.org/gotv_phonebanking)

Also for GOTV this year, each chapter received a tablet and portable printer to make voter registration right at our stands and during other events possible. We were all very excited about getting started with these new tools. If you are interested in helping with our GOTV efforts or have ideas, please reach out to us at dag-hamburg@democratsabroad.org or dag-chair@democratsabroad.org.

Finally, the location of next year's AGM was voted on. It was a close race between Kaiserslautern and Heidelberg, with Heidelberg winning by only a couple votes. After the positive experience of this year's AGM, we in Hamburg are very much looking forward to it!

Don't let Congress forget the DACA Dreamers

In September, President Trump put an arbitrary expiration date on the DACA program, forcing thousands of young immigrants to worry about being deported to countries they no longer call home. He put their fate in the hands of Congress and last week, the Senate failed to pass a bill to provide a path to citizenship for the Dreamers. Despite widespread, bipartisan support for DACA, Senators packed their bags and headed to home for a week without finishing what they started.

Call your Senators’ and Representative’s state offices today. Tell your representatives not to forget the Dreamers and to pass a bill that will grant them legal status before the March 5th deadline imposed by President Trump.

    Find your Senators here.

Add your voice to those being raised back home. Encourage your friends to host a sit in or rally in your home state.
