Global Advocacy Coordinator


About the Position

Democrats Abroad (DA) was the margin of victory for Joe Biden in Georgia and Arizona, and we’re determined to not only deliver scale-tipping votes in races across the United States in 2021 and 2022, but also transport the perspectives of U.S. citizens living abroad back to lawmakers stateside. In consultation with relevant stakeholders, the Global Advocacy Coordinator will work to develop, coordinate, and run internal and external advocacy campaigns about issues central to the lives of U.S. citizens living abroad, including absentee ballot access/return methods, taxation, Medicare portability, and other areas deemed appropriate by the DA International Executive Committee and/or by the Democratic Party Committee Abroad (DPCA) voting body.

Responsibilities

  • Consult relevant stakeholders to assess the current legislative landscape for issues central to U.S. citizens abroad
  • Develop a strategic advocacy plan for 2022 that identifies key areas for improvement and sets measurable goals
  • Closely monitor legislative situation stateside, identifying and acting upon opportunities for DA
  • In consultation with the DA International Executive Committee, create and implement DA policy and workflow for external outreach
  • Compile, build, and grow a centralized list of external contacts
  • In consultation with the DA International Chair, organize and attend external meetings on behalf of DA
  • Document outcomes of external meetings and next steps in a centralized location
  • Build strong relationships with and regularly solicit input from other DA global leaders
  • Work closely with Global Social Media, Internal Communications, Press, and Engagement Coordinators to ensure coherent, consistent, and effective internal and external messaging about advocacy campaigns
  • Report to DA International Executive Committee members on a bi-weekly basis and regularly attend their meetings

Skills & Qualifications

  • Commitment to helping DA, the Democratic Party, and Democratic candidates succeed
  • Member of Democrats Abroad (join here)
  • Deep first-hand knowledge of the U.S. voting constituency abroad, as well as of issues unique to overseas voters
  • Ability to break down complex information and clearly communicate essential points to a larger audience
  • Deep first-hand knowledge of the U.S. political landscape and legislative process
  • Deep familiarity with tools, tactics, and technologies for running effective advocacy campaigns
  • Demonstrated track record of consulting and working with stakeholders to deliver results
  • Ability to adapt and adjust approaches given the changing nature of policy and the political climate
  • Outgoing, persuasive, and detail-oriented personality
  • Exceptionally comfortable working with legislative and legal texts
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects across multiple time zones
  • Comfortable using Google Workspace programs
  • Previous legislative and/or legal experience advantageous

Logistical Details

Location: Online

Estimated Time Commitment: 15-20 hours/week, with understanding that hours may need to increase during the peaks of legislative sessions

Language: English

Start Date: From August 16, 2021

End Date: May 2023

Compensation: Unpaid (but tremendously rewarding!)
