Good news from the Steering Committee of the Veterans and Military Family Caucus

Good news!  This week the US House of Representatives passed Bill 124 about transgenders serving in the military  https://www.congress.gov/bill/116th-congress/house-resolution/124/all-info.  This bill had been introduced in February by Joseph Kennedy III in opposition to banning service in the Armed Forces by openly transgender individuals.

You can see how your Representative voted here: http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2019/roll135.xml.

Now the Senate needs to pass their bill https://www.congress.gov/116/bills/s373/BILLS-116s373is.pdf.

What about the ERA? – Call to Action!

The campaigns for the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment are still in progress and we need your help.   You can find all the details on https://www.democratsabroad.org/era_senatedemocratsabroad.org/era.

Here’s a quick update on the status for 2019:

State Level – For 2019, the deadline to ratify has passed for AR, GA, MS, OK, UT, VA.    The state legislature cutoff date for the other states are AL (Jun 18), AZ (Apr 22), FL (May 3), LA (Jun 6), MO (May 17), NC (Jun 30), SC (May 9).  If you vote in one of those states, please contact your state legislature representatives to support the ERA – details on www.democratsabroad.org/era.

National Level – There are bills in both the U.S. Senate (S.J.Res. 6) and U.S. House (H.J.Res. 38) to remove the deadline for the ERA amendment.  Both are assigned to the respective Judiciary Committee.

HELP REQUEST – less than 10 minutes

1 - Please write your 2 U.S. Senators and ask them to co-sponsor S.J.Res.6 – or thank them if they have.   Here’s a link to find their email link along with sample text to include - https://www.democratsabroad.org/era_senate.   So far, there are 4 co-sponsors – 1 Dem, 2 Rep, and 1 Ind.   We probably need to get at least 4 more Republican co-sponsors for it to pass.

2 – Please write your U.S. Representative and ask them to co-sponsor H.J.Res.38 – or thank them if they have.  Here’s a link to find details on what to do – www.democratsabroad.org/era_house.   So far, there are 180 co-sponsors – 179 Dem and 1 Rep.  This should pass without a problem so if you only have 5 minutes, just write your 2 Senators.
