Books Abroad: Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov

DID SOMEONE SAY “MASTERPIECE?”

“How do we keep these very powerful men from being so abusive? I don’t think we’re going to stop them from being abusive, so let’s stop them from being so powerful.” --- Rebecca Solnitt

Join us on Sunday, April 26 at 4 pm (CET) to read (or reread) and discuss Lolita by Vladimir Nabokoov, a 1955 bestseller.

Lolita is surely MASTERful, i.e. full of MASTER and the famous male gaze. Thank goodness for women who have been rereading and rethinking this and all these so-called erotic and iconic MASTERpieces.

In light of Jeffrey Epstein's horrors, and the pedophiliac culture, reading and discussing Lolita anew can be an instructive and interesting adventure. Epstein kept a first edition of Lolita in one of his mansions and named his private plane after the girl Humbert groomed and raped.  Regardless of Epstein's apparent identification with Humbert, he more closely can be identified with the Marquis de Sade.
