  • Vote in the Georgia Primary Election - May 24, 2022

GEORGIA IS HOLDING ITS DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY ON MAY 24--MAKE SURE YOUR VOICE IS HEARD!

What elections are there in Georgia? What am I voting for?

Georgia will hold a Democratic Primary on May 24 for U.S. Representatives and U.S. Senate as well as state-wide offices such as Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, State Supreme Court, and your State Representatives and State Senators. The winners of these Democratic primary races will go up against the Republicans in the November 8, 2022 General Election.

The US Senate seat is currently held by Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock, who won the special election in a runoff. We need to keep this Democratic seat in November to hold onto the Democratic majority in the Senate.

And you may also be able to vote to choose the Democratic candidates for Governor, Lt Governor, Secretary of State, and your representatives to the Georgia state legislature. It depends on the category you choose when you register to vote and request your ballot:

    • If you "intend to return": You are eligible to vote in Georgia state elections.
*You don't have to have a set date of return and it doesn't have to be within a set time frame, but you do need to have an intention to return at some time in the future.

    • If your “return is uncertain”: You won’t be eligible to vote in Georgia state elections, but you can still vote in the federal election for the US House and US Senate.

*Please note: Selecting “intend to return” may contribute towards establishing yourself as a tax resident in Georgia. Because the legal requirements to establish “residence” or “domicile” for tax purposes are determined by state law and the specific facts of your life, before you note that you intend to return on your form, you may consider seeking advice on these matters from a tax professional

Georgia state elections are hugely important! State government is responsible for voting and state policies regarding climate change, education, health insurance, net neutrality, student loans, and more affect us no matter where we go around the world.

    1) Register to Vote and Request Your Ballot Today

It's easy to request your ballot. And your ballot request covers all elections in 2022, so send the form in now and ensure your ballot for the May 24th Primary and for the November 8th General election.

Go to www.votefromabroad.org and follow the prompts to fill out the form to request your ballot, the Federal Post Card Application form (FPCA). (If needed, it will also serve as a voter registration.) To ensure you receive your ballot in time, please check the box on the FPCA to have your blank ballot sent to you by “Email/Online” or “Fax”.

You can send in your FPCA to your local election office in Georgia by email (recommended) or fax or mail.

    • If you are registered to vote, you MUST still send in an FPCA to request your ballot in 2022 to vote in this election and it must be received by May 13, 2022.

    • If you are NOT registered to vote, your FPCA must be received by April 25, 2022.

    2) When You Get Your Ballot, Fill It Out and Mail It Back Right Away

Ballots for the Primary started going out on April 9, 2022. If you asked for your ballot by email, be sure to check your spam folder and any secondary inboxes.

When you get your ballot, fill it out and mail it back away. It must be postmarked no later than May 24, 2022 AND it also must be received in Georgia by May 27, 2022.

NEW! Georgia is using a new voting information website so the link and the procedures to download your ballot are different this year. The new website is https://mvp.sos.ga.gov/s/

    • To download your ballot, log into the website.
    • Then click on "Absentee Ballot Portal" on the upper bar.
    • Scroll down to "UOCAVA Ballots" section and click on the links to download your ballot. (NOTE: The links to download your ballot are under the "View UOCAVA Ballot" button.)

For more information, please see: GA: Helpful Info for UOCAVA Ballots

You will see 2 ballots for this election: the regular ballot and a “ranked choice” ballot in case of a Runoff election. If no candidate receives over 50% of the vote, the election for that office will go to a Primary Runoff on June 21, 2022.

Because the Primary Runoff election is scheduled so soon after the Primary election, Georgia is providing overseas voters with a separate “ranked choice” ballot to mail in at the same time as your regular ballot. If a Runoff Primary is necessary, your “ranked choice” ballot will be used. If no Runoff Primary is necessary, the “ranked choice” ballot will be discarded.

    3) If You Don't Have Your Ballot Yet, Mail in a Backup Ballot

If you haven't received your ballot yet, we recommend you mail in a Backup Ballot (the Federal Write-in Absentee Ballot, or FWAB). It’s only for overseas voters and protects your right to vote in case your official ballot doesn't arrive in time. For detailed information how to use the Backup Ballot, please go to www.votefromabroad.org/fwab

When you use the Backup Ballot for a Primary election, the website will indicate the candidates for US Senate, and the candidates for US House in your Congressional District.

And you may use the Backup Ballot for state elections as well, but you will need to add those to the “Write In Candidates” section. You can use this website to find the candidates in your jurisdiction: https://ballotpedia.org/Sample_Ballot_Lookup

Then write in the office and your choice in the "Write in Candidates" block of the Backup Ballot. Please remember, this is a Primary election, so you must write in the candidate's name, not just the political party:

    4) Confirm That Your Ballot Was Accepted and Counted

After you send in your ballot, make sure your vote is counted!

You can check your ballot status online using www.mvp.sos.ga.gov/MVP/mvp.do

Or, you can email or call your local election office directly. You can find the contact information at: www.votefromabroad.org/states/ga; scroll down to "Find Your Election Office"

Ballots can be rejected for any mistakes, such as failing to sign the ballot. But you can fix those errors if you find them in time!

If your election office informs you that your ballot was rejected, you may be able to submit an "Absentee Ballot Cure Affidavit" to fix the problem. But time is limited; your cure form must get to Georgia by May 27 (3 days after the election). The earlier you return your ballot, the more time you will have to fix any problems.

  • Vote in the Texas Primary Election - March 1, 2022

TEXAS IS HOLDING THE FIRST ELECTION OF 2022--MAKE SURE YOUR VOICE IS HEARD!

What elections are there in Texas? What am I voting for?

Texas will hold a Democratic Primary on March 1 for U.S. Representatives as well as for statewide offices like Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, State Representatives, and State Senators. The winners of these Democratic primary races will go up against the Republicans in the November 2022 General Election.

Learn more about who's running here: Statewide Democratic Candidates Who Have Filed to Run in the 2022 Democratic Primary

And you may also be able to vote to choose the Democratic candidates for Governor, Lt Governor, other state offices, and your representatives to the Texas state legislature. It depends on the category you choose when you register to vote and request your ballot:

    • If you "intend to return": You are eligible to vote in Texas state elections.
You don't have to have a set date of return and it doesn't have to be within a set time frame, but you do need to have an intention to return at some time in the future.

    • If your “return is uncertain”: You won’t be eligible to vote in Texas state elections, but you can still vote in the federal election for the US House.

State elections are hugely important! State government is responsible for voting and state policies regarding climate change, education, health insurance, net neutrality, student loans, and more affect us no matter where we go around the world.

    1) Register to Vote and Request Your Ballot Today

It's easy to request your ballot. And your ballot request covers all elections in 2022, so send the form in now and ensure your ballot for the Primary Runoff (if necessary) and for the November 8th General election.

You can send in your FPCA to your local election office in Texas by email (recommended) or mail.

    • If you are registered to vote, you MUST still send in an FPCA to request your ballot in 2022 to vote in this election and it must be received by February 18, 2022.

    • If you are NOT registered to vote, you will receive a federal ballot only but your FPCA must be received by February 18, 2022.

    2) When You Get Your Ballot, Fill It Out and Mail It Back Right Away

Ballots started going out on January 15, 2022. If you asked for your ballot by email and haven't received it yet, be sure to check your spam folder and any secondary inboxes.

When you get your ballot, fill it out and mail it back away. It must be postmarked no later than March 1, 2022 AND it also must be received in Texas by March 7, 2022.

Special Deadline: Fax ballot return is available to members of the military and their family members who are in hostile fire pay, imminent danger pay or combat zones. Ballots sent by fax must be received by March 1, 2022 at 7:00pm Texas time.

If you have questions about how to return your ballot, we've prepared these Texas Ballot Return Instructions.

Remember, however, that your Local Election Official in Texas determines whether to accept your ballot, that office is the final authority. If you have any questions or see any discrepancies, please be sure to call or email your Local Election Official. You can find the contact information at: www.votefromabroad.org/states/tx (Scroll down to "Find Your Election Office").

When you use the Backup Ballot for the Texas Primary, the website will indicate the candidates for US House in your Congressional District.

And if you are eligible to vote in state elections, you may use the Backup Ballot as well. There are several state offices on the ballot including:

Governor, Lt Governor, Attorney General, Comptroller, Commissioner of Agriculture, Land Commissioner, Railroad Commission, 3 seats on the Texas Supreme Court, 3 seats on the Court of Criminal Appeals, State Senate, and State House.

Can't Vote in New Jersey State Elections Because of Your Voting Category? You Can Help Change That!

Many overseas voters in New Jersey lost their right to vote in New Jersey state elections after Chris Christie pushed through a change in the law in 2017 disenfranchising voters who indicate their "return is uncertain."

A group of dedicated Democrats Abroad members who vote in New Jersey have been working with leaders in the New Jersey state legislature to fix the law. And in 2021, Assemblywoman Downey, Assemblyman Mukherji, and State Senator Vin Gopal introduced a bill, NJ A5306/S3761, to change the law back and enfranchise voters once again.

Thanks to the efforts of DA members like you, this bill passed the Assembly this summer! Now we need your help to get it passed in the State Senate. Please contact your State Senator and ask them to cosponsor this bill. Go to demsabroad.org/NJsen for contact information and talking points. Make your voice heard!

      NO

US Overseas Registered Voter Engagement Program

As the official overseas arm of the Democratic Party of the United States, Democrats Abroad sends occasional communications to US voters who live or work outside the territorial US. This is part of our mission to maintain political engagement with US voters. To enable us to contact US voters who are not members of Democrats Abroad, we receive personal data from the constituent committee of the Democratic Party in, or the local election officials of, the US state, district or territory where the voter is registered. Data we receive for this purpose consists of information previously disclosed by the US voter to US local election officials. The data we receive this way is normally limited to the voter’s name, overseas address, and registered voting address in the US. We supply some of this data to our constituent Country Committees so they can facilitate making contact with voters resident in that country. Democrats Abroad uses this data only for purposes of political engagement and we delete this data at intervals of not more than four (4) years. You can find our contact details and details of our privacy policies here: https://www.democratsabroad.org/privacy  [v.1.2.VA15092021]

  • California Voters - VOTE "NO" in the Sept 14th Recall Election

Democrats Need to Turn Out & VOTE "NO" -- Don't Let Republicans Take the California Governor's Office

Democrats must turn out to vote AGAINST the recall of current California Governor Gavin Newsom (D)! If this recall succeeds, Republicans will remove Newsom, who won in 2018 with nearly 62% of the vote, and replace him with a Republican.

Democrats can't afford to be complacent in this election. Republicans are highly motivated and even in a deep blue state like California, recent polls indicate that likely voters are now evenly split. Think of the damage a Republican Governor could do in California and beyond. We cannot sit on our hands and allow Republicans to take the Governor's office.

      1)  FILL OUT YOUR RECALL BALLOT TODAY!

Ballots went out to all California voters on July 31--either via email or postal mail depending on the preference you indicated. If you haven't seen your ballot yet, check your spam folder and secondary inboxes.

Here's what the ballot looks like--Stop the Recall by Voting NO!

**Special Note to Voters in Counties That Require a California Driver's License to Access Your Ballot**

We're hearing that the ballot access link for some counties, such as Alameda, require voters to provide a California Driver's License.
Don't worry--you can get your ballot even without a Calif Driver's License! According to Calif election officials:

IF YOU DON'T HAVE A CALIFORNIA DRIVER'S LICENSE, ENTER THIS NUMBER INSTEAD: A1234567.

IMPORTANT: If you didn't get your ballot, you may be able to vote, but time is running short, so don't delay!

First, confirm that you're on the voter rolls and your ballot was sent out to you. You can check online using this website: https://california.ballottrax.net/voter  Or, email or call your local election office. You can find the contact information at: www.votefromabroad.org/states/ca; scroll down to "Find Your Election Office"

Then, ask your local election office to email you a new one. It's the same contact information--just go www.votefromabroad.org/states/ca; scroll down to "Find Your Election Office"

Alternatively, many counties have ballots available for download, known as the Remote Accessible Ballot By Mail ("RAVBM"). RAVBMs were originally set up for voters with disabilities, but are available for all voters in 2021.

    • The link for Los Angeles County's downloadable RAVBM is: https://ravbm.lavote.net

    • The link for San Francisco County's downloadable RAVBM is: https://sfelections.org/tools/ravbm

    • If you vote in another county, you can find out if it has RAVBM ballots available for download by searching for "[name of your county] RAVBM"

Finally, if you have trouble getting in touch with your local election office or cannot download a ballot, you can also vote using a Backup Ballot (the Federal Write-in Absentee Ballot, or FWAB). It’s only for overseas voters and protects your right to vote. For detailed information how to use the Backup Ballot, please go to www.votefromabroad.org/fwab

The Backup Ballot isn't set up for an unusual election like the Governor Recall election, but in the "Write in Candidates" section, you can indicate "Governor Recall Election" and "NO"  Here's an example:

Then send in your Backup Ballot by fax or mail, just like the official ballot.

      2)  RETURN YOUR BALLOT TO YOUR LOCAL ELECTION OFFICE IN CALIFORNIA--DON'T WAIT, DO IT NOW!

We recommend returning your ballot by FAX. If you return it by fax, it must be received by September 14, 8:00 PM (California time).

Most people don't have a fax machine these days, but you can fax back your ballot using one of these methods:

    1. Use a public fax machine (search for "fax machine near me");

    2. Use an email-to-fax service (search for online services or a fax app for your phone);

    3. Use the email-to-fax service through the Federal Voting Assistance Program (www.FVAP.gov).

For more ideas on how to return your ballot by fax, go to www.votefromabroad.org/how-to-return-your-ballot (under "How to Return Your Ballot Electronically").

You can also return your ballot by postal mail, but be careful of the deadlines. If you return your ballot by postal mail, it must be Postmarked by September 14 AND Received in California September 21.

      3) CONFIRM THAT YOUR BALLOT WAS ACCEPTED AND WILL BE COUNTED

Make sure your vote is counted. Please make sure your ballot was received and accepted.

Track your ballot online using this website: https://california.ballottrax.net/voter

Or, email or call your local election office. You can find the contact information at: www.votefromabroad.org/states/ca; scroll down to "Find Your Election Office"
