About our speaker:
Nick Steiner is a staff attorney at the ACLU, with a focus on immigrants’ rights. Beginning in September 2017, he will start an Equal Justice Works Fellowship funded by the Ottinger Foundation and an Anonymous donor that aims to curtail local law enforcement in Maryland from participating in the federal immigration process. He is one of the attorneys working on IRAP v. Trump (the ACLU case suing the Trump administration for the “Muslim Ban”) and is currently working on several cases involving constitutional violations of the First Amendment, Fourth Amendment, and statutory violations committed by police (profiling, transparency, and more). He has testified in numerous local hearings, in support of “sanctuary” bills that would provide local protections to the immigrant community, and against anti-immigrant legislation that would multiply the number of immigrants put in removal proceedings. He has also given Know Your Rights trainings, where individuals learn how to assert their constitutional rights when interacting with police and immigration agents.
