Job Description: Executive Director

Position Overview

The Executive Director (ED) of Democrats Abroad (DA) serves as the staff member responsible for helping execute the organization’s global strategic vision as outlined and defined by the International Chair and International Executive Committee (ExCom). The ED contributes to the effective functioning, long-term sustainability and growth of Democrats Abroad by providing operational support and guidance to ensure the success of DA and its local and global committees and teams. The ED facilitates alignment, resource sharing, and coordination between the DNC, ASDC and DA to advance the effective execution of DA’s mission. The ED provides expertise and assistance to DA’s elected leaders and volunteer teams.

Key Partnerships

The ED works hand-in-hand with the International Chair, and closely with:

  • International Executive Committee (ExCom)
  • Global Team Leads (GOTV, Communications, Fundraising, etc.)
  • Country Committee Leaders
  • U.S.-based partners including Democratic National Committee, ASDC, elected officials, press, and aligned organizations

Core Responsibilities

Strategic Development

  • Support the International Chair and the International Executive Committee in the development and implementation of a four-year strategic plan and 2026 voter mobilization and digital outreach plan. 
  • Evaluate procedures and implement improvements, as requested by the ExCom, for internal platforms including the DA Wiki, Vote From Abroad, Nationbuilder, Intercom, and Mighty DA.
  • Support the Treasurer and Treasury team with finance oversight and reporting, as needed. 
  • Work with the Executive Committee, Fundraising Chair and other DA leaders and stakeholders to manage and expand donor fundraising programs
  • Work with the Data Protection Officer and the Excom to ensure DA policies are in compliance with international laws and regulations
  • Collaborate with the Communications Director to align messaging with DA’s global strategy, priorities, and ensure cross-functional coordination so Comms efforts align with voter outreach, advocacy, events, and other teams.
  • Work closely with Communications and Press teams to ensure the political sensitivities of host countries are recognized and adapted to.


Stakeholder Engagement & Advocacy

  • Work with Regional Vice Chairs and Country Committee (CC) Leadership to ensure the global strategic plans and opportunities can be adapted and executed in their countries.
  • Represent Democrats Abroad when needed with legislators, candidates, non-profits, and the press
  • Attend meetings of the DNC, ASDC, and other Democratic committees as requested
  • Advocate for the interests of U.S. citizens abroad—particularly regarding overseas voting rights, taxation, banking and reporting obligations, and Medicare portability
  • Maintain and expand a network of politically engaged US citizens abroad to assist the organization in achieving its goals


Training & Leadership Development

  • Coordinate the development and delivery of leadership onboarding and development programs
  • Develop and maintain an overview of platforms and software for DA leaders to facilitate, enable  and strengthen both global and local  initiatives
  • Support volunteer recruitment and development engagement and retention procedures to build a dedicated network of both new and experienced volunteers.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience with the Democratic Party or its affiliates
  • Deep familiarity with Democrats Abroad, volunteer coordination, federal campaign finance law,  GDPR and other international data privacy and security regulations, and UOCAVA voting rights
  • Proven track record in managing staff and volunteers in a campaign or nonprofit setting
  • Demonstrated experience in project management, team building, strategic planning, targeting, messaging, compliance, and digital tools
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills 
  • Experience with paid digital communication 
  • Strong command of IT technologies and platforms including:  Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, Zoom/Meet/Webex, and a CRM platform (Nationbuilder or equivalent)
  • Experience teaching/training volunteers 
  • U.S. citizenship (dual citizens welcome)
  • Global fluency—ability to coordinate across multiple time zones and cultures
  • Prior experience living outside the U.S. 
  • Ability to travel to the United States and abroad. 

Good to Have

  • Experience with Confluence, Nationbuilder and Intercom
  • Fluency in least two languages
  • Experience with Party Coordinator Campaigns or equivalent
  • Demonstrated experience in cross-cultural communications
  • European-based time zone

Compensation & Details

  • Reports To: International Chair and Executive Committee
  • Location: Remote, with international and U.S. travel as needed
  • Schedule: Full-time, with flexible hours across global time zones
  • Compensation: Competitive, commensurate with experience and location
  • Benefits:  paid time off, travel and technology support
  • Start date: October 1, 2025
