A summer cycle tour around Germany, plus Luxembourg City and Prague

the route of my tour

The journey begins in Rostock and ends there just shy of one month later. I had intended to get to Salzburg; I came close but didn't quite make it there.

In many ways, the contrast between East and West Germany remains as strong and worrisome as ever. Much of my way was along abandoned rail lines aka "rails to trails", of which Germany has remarkably many. Hamlin -- home to the Pied Piper -- meant sharing the (very traditional, old-fashioned) hostel with a class of gymnasium students. Good fun! Luxembourg City is not the best place to run into a huge open air concert, navigating streams of thousands of people flowing into the nearby stadium. Dachau is a sobering reminder of "never again" that can always use reinforcing. The German/Czech border is a reminder of how things have changed since the last time I visited the border. Prague demanded that I stay longer, but time was slipping away and my cat was waiting for me at home.
