Josephine Baker Gala

Updated: This event is now SOLD OUT. Thank you for your support!

Please join us for a gala celebration honoring Josephine Baker's induction into the Pantheon: “Josephine Baker: Dans Toutes Ses Couleurs / In All Her Colors” on Tuesday, November 23rd at the American Center for Art and Culture at 7 PM. This very special event is hosted by Democrats Abroad France, the DA France Diversity Caucus, the DA France Women’s Caucus, the DA Global Black Caucus, and the DA Global Women’s Caucus, with the generous support of the American Center for Art and Culture.

American-born singer and dancer Josephine Baker (1906-1975) will be the first black woman to enter the Panthéon mausoleum of France, France's highest honor. A renowned artist and entertainer, Josephine Baker was an American-born French woman who changed the world through her music and battle against fascism during World War II. Baker served as a member of the Red Cross and the Free France Movement, and used her proximity to soldiers as an entertainer to smuggle messages for the French Resistance. Her contributions extended beyond her heroism during the war to the Civil Rights Movement; she returned frequently to America to fight against racism. She refused to perform in segregated clubs and theaters, and spoke alongside Martin Luther King Jr. in the March on Washington.

World-renowned artists including jazz pianist and composer Jacky Terrasson, vocalist Ursuline Kairson, poet and spoken word performer Victor Andre Greene will perform for our guests this celebratory evening. Former artistic director of the Parc Josephine Baker Brian Scott Bagley will serve as emcee and host, as we explore "Josephine Baker: Dans Toutes Ses Couleurs / In All Her Colors."
